Thanks guys, but......

This game has actual controller support, so no, it's nothing as hacky as controller to kbm schemes. I play this game on PC (Linux) with a controller, so I think I can claim that it works just fine like that. I'm actually more confused trying to figure out why Ryzilynt's friends were complaining about the building rotation, as the only problems with playing this with a controller are inherrent in the basic game controls, and are no different between kbm and controller.

I think the (alleged) issue is that you can rotate building parts with the scroll wheel on the mouse slightly faster than you can flick the stick with the controller. From my experience, it doesn't take long to get that so it's very quick, so I don't see it as a significant issue.

Thanks Warchild, that's what I was hoping to hear.
I know the Steam Deck is (relatively) new and although they do a GREAT job labeling the compatibility of the games to the Deck, I have found some of my favorite games I already own are listed as fully compatible, which technically, they are, but then in the game, the left stick controls the mouse pointer or things like that and then you have to click on parts of the game.... So I'm trying to avoid "It technically works but the controls don't quite translate"
Two things I'd like to suggest then.
protondb.com - it's nothing so simple as "Works/Doesn't Work), when you click on a title, it'll be filled with reports of how it worked for people. It also includes any tweaks (such as launch options or setting changes) to get the most out of it. Just be sure to keep an eye out for "It doesn't work" posts being from old versions of proton.
Secondly, you should configure the controller scheme in steam to get it to work more like you'd want, however, the hacky controller-to-kbm problem will always be there, unfortunately. Mouse controls are terrible for controllers, I've been remapping controllers (often to keyboard buttons) since long before steam thought about it, and I still strongly dislike mouse controls and what little we can do with them on a controller.
So, in general, I'd look for games that either list controller support on their store page, or use a menu or camera based system instead of a mouse cursor.

I agree, Warchild. remapping controllers in steam (historically) has been wonky and I have avoided for much of my life by just using KB+M, lol.... I will say however, so far, with most games I have played on my steam deck, it has done a GREAT job of setting the controller at the start of the game, and so far, I've not had to adjust very much. So I would say Steam really upped itrs game with controller support for the Deck. I mean, they almost had to. It's like the one thing the Deck HAS to do right.
For others looking into this game for these reasons:
I have found Valheim to work just right on Steam Deck, with no wonky controller issues at all.

Biggest complaints I have heard from friends using a controller is that rotating build pieces is more tedious. They prefer to have a mouse option available in addition to the controller (mostly for the mouse wheel)..
But if the steam deck has something like a track pad or something it might be a non issue.
