What's the verdict on fishing?

A decent fish update with Mistlands. I don't think fishing in games is for me though. I've tried it a few times, but unless there's a clear benefit to it, I doubt I'll put much time into it.

What do you think about fishing in Valheim? Do you put time into it? What's the draw and what should be improved?

I wanted to try fish-and-bread but misty bait requires a lox trophy and those are not cheap. Then the angler fish seemed to stare at the misty bait and I ended up just going into the water and trying to kick them onto the shore. A mushroom omelette is nearly as good for stamina and does not require nearly as much effort. But I did save my fish-and-bread for The Queen and that was nearly worth it.

I liked fishing but now we get the fish jumping into the boat too often as others have said.

Is there not "fish jerky"? If there isn't, why wouldn't that have like +60 stamina +60hp? It's fish. Made into jerky. Idk if that's actually possible but it would actually make sense stamina wise

parking the boat during a storm near shoreline > fishing with the rod.

Fish wraps are still fine. You can get more raw fish per fish you caught. The only real downside is that you can no longer cook raw fish on a campfire, which seems nonsensical to many of us. But before the update fishing was such a chore that you wouldn't be doing too much of that anyway.

You don't need to get into fishing now if you didn't do it previously. With each update, there may be new food recipes introduced, so keep an eye out for those.
I'll likely fish a bit to get recipes and unlock things, but there's quite a few different fishes now that are unlocked in by certain things, and a fishing skill too. I think it will take some effort to progress in this fishing feature, which is why I wonder if it's to be viewed primarily as a collector thing with a side dish, or something more integrated, maybe not required, but with enough benefits to draw the non-collectors in.

I didn’t like it before and I don’t like it now.
However, i like how they developed it into a minigame you can play if you want. If you don’t want to, you can easily skip fishing like you could before. You will miss some foods, but it’s not a big deal since there is plenty other good foods.

If you want to have all the biggest fish on your trophies wall, you will need to invest a lot of hours in fishing. If you don’t care about it, you can skip it without any loss in game progress.

That would be a breaking change though and some people are pretty determined to keep their very first ever world - so I can't see the devs doing more than tweaks now.
You're thinking about potential mechanical benefits by getting 'later level' fishes for food?

I'm still not sure what the end purpose of fishing in Valheim is going to be. Fishing exists in many other games, often as a side feature, but I can't say I've played any of them (aside from Gone Fish'n..).

Is it mostly a side feature where the goal is to catch them all, with a few recipes as a bonus?
Or will the mechanics be expanded upon, to a point when you'll get enough benefits to warrant fishing even if you're not a collector?

Currently near pointless.
Fish beach themselves so much you can get it that way and the food you make from anglers is only marginally better.
Tl;dr: immersion.

technically the only difference are late game foods and instead of a few fish one ends up in having bazillions of raw fish somewhere

i hope for cooking receipe alternatives for all the fish

This. Plus if you are sailing and see fish jumping you can sail through where they are and one will occasionally jump into your boat where you can easily pick it up.

Fish jump way too high and way too often to the point i thought i was heading into a swarm of bugs. Plus fishing with the pole is now even worse, it consumes more stamina and needs to be leveled to be viable...

sail along the shore line. The fish will jump onto shore and into your boat...
