Fired needed next to bed... why?
I need a fire next to my bed yet I'm not allowed to place one inside? I placed one outside the wall and now it's storming and it's putting my fire out. So am I just not allowed to sleep at all? I don't understand why this is a mechanic.

its supposed to immerse you and encourage you to build a hearth in your home, home is where the Hearth/Heart is. a hearth needs a chimney. The fire mechanics are actually semi-realistic and one of the cooler bits of the game mechanics. Fires need draft (so air gets in), venting so smoke gets out (although this can be cheesed), and cover from rain and wind. A fire right next to your building benefits from 3-4 half walls around the base, and a roof suspended far enough above to let the smoke vent out. The roof can be a slanted section or peak section (your choice).
The partially ruined buildings you find with a narrow 2m channel down the center of the roof can have a fire at the end opposite the door (remove the center floorboards to expose the dirt) and no chimney, as that center channel is big enough to dissipate the smoke above your head. Just repair the damage and move in :)

You also can't sleep when you're wet and getting wet happens every five seconds so even if you didn't need a fire by your bed to sleep, you'd still need a fire by your bed to sleep

Build your roof high enough and you wont need a chimney.

You can put it inside on the dirt but you must make a chimney or you can put a roof over it outside and Presto there ya go.

Sometimes. That's where you have to build walls. I agree its dumb but thats what ya got to do. The funny thing is even with a chimney you still need something to stop rain. Unless someone has found a way that is.But wont the rain still put it out? You can put it inside on the dirt but you must make a chimney or you can put a roof over it outside and Presto there ya go.

To be honest having to make a workbench evvery single time you whip out the hammer is plenty dumb too. (I know not EVERY time but damn it feels like it)

You can take a piece of roofing and turn it 180 degrees and voila - it stops your fire from going out. You can do this easily in a corner of a hut you have taken over or if you put the fire outside next to the wall you can also di it. If really stormy then put up a half wall outside in the direction of the prevailing wind. Surprisingly effective.
When you do a fresh build then you take the chimney sides up to level of roof then put up a 2' pc of wood in all 4 corners then a little roof cap. Must leave room for smoke to exit. Learning how smoke works early in the game saves much. You can also make interesting chimneys and there's lots of vids on them. Just like in real life, folks actually die from not understanding smoke.

If you don’t want to build a fire in your house, you can actually use the forge and then immediately try to fall asleep. An active forge actually counts as a fire source, and it stays active for a second or two after you’ve finished activating it.

Gets cold at night. Just like olden days, we are warmed by the fire.
Not like Vikings had Central Heating.

Like a real chimney, you put a cap on it. Put up 4 posts and a little roof over your chimney, vent with cap!
