How tedious is it using the trick to find silver?

I'm not sure I want to kill bonemass yet because my base isn't yet prepared for flying raids, but I'd like to get some silver.

How easy/time-consuming is it to use the trick to find silver without killing bonemass? (trying not to give spoilers)

Like with non-flying raids your base doesn't need much protecting if you take the fight outside. Maybe shelter your livestock. Personally I ignore taming wholesale. It may even be argued that drakes are some of the more manageable enemies to deal with in raids because being slow and airborne makes it easier to pull them away from your stuff from afar.

Every biome has at least one pest-tier enemy and that is what drakes are to the mountains. Wolves are a bigger concern and even then that is only if they are grouped.
Bonemass unlocks a lot of raids, and that was the reason we skipped him the first two times. (Third was just for fun.) Not just the Drakes (since that one is only temporary), but blobs, skeletons, bats, and wolves. Once we found one node, we typically had enough silver for one weapon each (when there were two of us) and a cloak (wolf or lox) to make finding the second and third nodes more easily. THree nodes was more than enough for two of us to get fully geared, I think.

Found a double silver vein once. The two veins were practically superimposed over each other. Crazy silver haul.

On sharp peaks is fairly easy to find a protruding silver vein.

If you think back to the black forest and mining copper and the trolls defending the copper deposit(s)

Golems are found near silver deposits (and/or abandoned mountain lodges).

Yep, in fact if you're clever you can even use the golems to do some mining for you, just like you can with trolls. Their attacks are big enough to deal AOE damage so if you can expose enough of the vein or get the terrain shallow enough that they hit the silver, they can do the job just fine.

Just make sure you're good at dodge rolling.

I've gotten 2 on several occasions. I've seen other people's screen shots of 3 and even 4.

@OP also forgot to mention silver is only found above the obsidian line in the mountains so small mountains rarely have any. (That's not really a spoiler its just a save yourself some frustration warning.)

Its not me being unable to beat bonemass thats the issue I just dont want to have to deal with aerial raids yet. I have T3 iron gear and T4 iron weapons so the actual boss fight will likely be pretty easy.

Ah yes thank you this is helpful. The mountain I was going to search has obsidian but its only big enough for 2 ice caverns so I'm not sure if any silver will be there. Maybe at the very peak it might be worth a check.

Found tons while quite simple.. totally blind mostly but every now and then exposed as mentioned at the steeper inclines. definately easy.. very few false signals.."too hard" unlike swamps and grave stone boat circles

I don't even use the wishbone anymore. I find the stagbreaker method to be faster than using the wishbone.

Just make sure the mountain is reasonably tall and look for relatively flat spots in the higher elevations. Pound a few times and move on if it doesn't register.

When you Find a Cabin in the Mountains with a golem nearby, there is usualy always a burried vein or 2 in the area.
There is also RNG factors that somtimes prop the Silver above ground, but the stag hammer trick can help find nodes Closer to the top.
Tediousness of blind digging is also RNG based on the actual spot silver is, though using a Mountain Cabins, as the area can cut down alot of blind digging.

I used to do it alot because I was always afraid of the bonemass fight. Takes time but its doable. Also a golem can have the same effect as well. These days I kill Bonemass as I found with T3 iron armor and Mace hes a pushover.

I'll usually like to wait to kill him as well. In most cases I'll head for the tallest mountains i can find and will just be lucky in finding some ore that will stick out of the terrain . But they're quite easy to miss if you're not paying close attention.

Mmm I think its one of those skills that's easier with experience. Just make sure your high enough for golems and obsidian to spawn. I find checking around pois is good idea like cabins, eggs and golem spawns. Other than that just keep whacking where you think a silver vein might be

I've done it on three playthroughs, and got three different results. One we were able to find on our first mountain trip. One we had tons of trouble with and even considered just giving up and doing Bonedaddy legit. And another one was kind of in-between.

It's pretty much a roll of the dice; depends on your seed and where you look.
