Wind in the sails... never happens.

Why does it always seem the wind is against you?

It changes often enough that it really doesn't bother me. If its really keeping me from where i want to sail then I sail like 45degrees to my destination long enough to zigzag back. In rivers and rough patches use the oar.

Use the Tacking technique, or simply plan your exploration based on wind direction.

No
Barley for example will process much faster in a storm.

Just use the oars and row its a good speed and constant.
WInd direction could depend on the land and biomes I think.
Passing the Mountains seem to have more. As for the wind direction that depends where your sailing to and from.
Wind IRL is formed out at sea by the currents around land mass and tides by the moon.

I've noticed a lot of storm activity now as soon as I set sail on a beautiful sunny morning. Used to be all day sunny and stormy at night.
Miss the exploring by sea in daytime due too much storm activity with fog title waves all the time .

Didn't you know? The wind always originates from your intended destination, and flows outward equally in all directions. Don't ask how the game knows what your intended destination is at all times...

Seriously though, it appears the wind is a global parameter, starts in one direction at one speed, and then changes directions and speeds quasi-randomly at quasi-random intervals. It's a common problem of human cognition to see patterns where there are none, and to feel a victim of fate.

Don't just trigger it as soon as you set sail. Wait until the wind is against you and then trigger it.

The wind does not have to always be perfectly behind you in order for you to move forward. It's also ok if it's at an angle with the direction you want to go. Just make sure it's not blowing directly from the front of the boat. That's it.

Google tack and gybe. Valheim implements this pretty well and is quite close to what happens in real life.

The wind is even better when blowing at at an angle. Lean back and enjoy the boat ride.

YouTubers have done tests and determined that sailing in a straight line is always faster than tacking in Valheim.

Remember to reduce your speed to one chevron when the wind is against you as that's the speed at which your character will start rowing.
