Nothing in this game is fair.

I died in my second base which is no doubt several kilometers from my main base. Luckily, they are connected by portal. I am at my second base when it gets raided by the swamp. All I have is iron-level equipment and am surrounded by 8+ NPC's at once. I have no stamina because I wasted it all on running and fighting. No matter where I run they are everywhere. For some strange ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ reason they target my portal and nothing else. Then I die. I respawn at my main base with nothing since I kept all my spares at the second base (I am there most of the time and die there most of the time). Now I have to travel several kilometers by boat with troll equipment. Why does this game put the player through so much work? Why can't I simply keep my inventory? I was surrounded by an overwhelming amount of NPC's and it wasn't even ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ fair anyways. Just let me ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ try again with the equipment I already had.

your portals are precious. Next time, what do you do differently?
my remote quick bases are made of raised terrain walls that you have to run and jump carefully to get into. Just a ring big enough for a roof, fire, portal, and a few comfort items like 3 rugs & a chair or whatever. The key to this game is making stuff inaccessible to the enemy more than trying to defend it with combat or multiple rings of walls and spikes etc.

but you may want to study what people told you about keeping your bases safe. A deep trench, or loft terrain up troll head high, or an island with anti-spawn are the 3 main approaches.
my personal design is a ring of lofted terrain (forms a 'basement' ) with floor tiles over that and build up from there. the lofted terrain keeps the baddies away and you get a 'free' level (the basement) as the upper part is still 'grounded' for building high. To get to my portal hub, a troll would need a pickaxe and 45 min.

So if I don't want to lose hours and spend hours getting them back I have to build fort knox? I never expected the game to be easy but I also didn't take the description of the game literally. This really is a "purgatory inspired by viking culture." I didn't know it was going to be literal ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ purgatory.

How do I not waste my stamina? Fighting loses stamina. Running away loses stamina. Am I just supposed to walk away? I'm getting 3 bows fired at me at once and Draugrs run faster than players who are not sprinting. I even have a gate to lock them out but it won't hold them back.

Balance your dodging, walk and running, dont fight at night without rested unless you have to it is gruelling and slow. your stam regen goes down when wet, or cold, you are always yet in the swamp and cold at night. Keep potions on your for both healing and stam regen. Eat the best foods you can make, don't "save them for a rainy day". Just farm the good materials and keep a stock pile, it is worth the effort.

Use trees and rock to break LOS with enemies so they cant kill you with arrows as they hunt you.

Mobs can't jump, if there is something to jump over , do that as it will give you time as they have to walk around to persue you.

Lol, you dont need all that. My bases are 100% open, no walls, no trenches. When i get attacked I kite the enemies away from my base and kill them myself. Combat in this game is pretty straight forward once you learn it.

You'll get bashed by those saying git good etc.

But you can use console to 'fly' there and grab your gear. Or, the corpse retrieval lot might still be working.

I generally go ott on building moats, walls etc for my base. But for the portals, I sometimes put them in their own little extra protected place.

I would get back there soon, as I heard all items on the floor not within a workbench area despawns after a few days.

Everything in this game is time, lost skill points = more time, lost equipment = more time, bad choices with where you are spawning instead of choosing a local spawn point during a fight = more time.

You pay for your mistakes by having to repeat your efforts. Hopefully you learn from them.

Challenging games are good games. If it was a walk in the park you would be board already.

OP should work on their combat skills though cause in all iron gear 8 swamp npc's should be a cake walk unless they are all 1 and two stars. Single swing from a upgraded iron mace kills the skellies, 2 hits for basic drauger 3 for elites, 1 for blobs...

Make sure you have potions ready to go and always eat before getting back in the fight after recovering your body.

idk if its because i play modded or not but the archer drauger are damn snipers if you go in a straight line which makes it easier for the melee ones to catch up if you zig zag

I know everyone will just tell you to "get good" and "This is why we play these games" - but from every survival game I played so far, this is the most frustrating one.

No matter what you do, the game wants you to suffer.

You go into the Black Forest to gather your first types of ore and different wood? Instantly after making noise, you are surrounded by 1-2 trolls, a wave of greydwarves and at that point, you are basically done for, because no matter what you do, you can't gather in peace, can't fight back well enough at this point and your inventories weight/slots are so minimal you are forced to run back with whatever you were able to gather in that short time frame.

Rinse and repeat until you finally got enough materials to gear up and not worry too much about it all, which still doesn't make it easier or fun though. Especially in the beginning.

This game loves to waste your time, It's unbelievable how good it is at that. And the game isn't even that difficult, It's artificial. Mechanics are piss poor, so what they do is, they throw numbers at you at such short intervalls that you are forced to either get overrun or suffer through a "Run-backwards-simulator-while-shooting-a-bow" type of gameplay.

Great potential, nostalgic graphics, nice theme and all, but man the combat is just annoying.

Sounds like you got punished for your mistakes and now cry on the forum about it instead of learning from it.

"no stamina because I wasted it all on running and fighting"
You can dodge attacks without sprinting.

Whenever I go out far to explore for new bases/islands, I try to find a small remote piece of land near the island and build a portal, house/bed, workbench, and new boat (I bring the materials for it with me)

The game does not throw waves at you when you make a noise, that is not a mechanic in the game at all. When you first explore a zone there are initial world populated enemies, once destroyed they only respawn at certain respawn points (invisible ones) and very slowly. World spawners (the physical object) are different again and can be destroyed to prevent them from constantly spawning more mobs. So when you first go into an area you need to clean out the initial seed mobs near ruins, or areas of interest, look around for spawners and kill them, then you only have to deal with the trickle or random spawns. (except at night, where the spawn increase dramatically, so you should sleep your nights off).

If you are getting a full wave of greydwaves it is either nigh time or you went near a set of ruins where the initial seed spawn of mobs is still alive. 1-2 trolls should not happen unless you actually kited one to another accidentally. There is normally spacing between trolls, not to say it cant happen but it is rare. Early game the only viable troll killing is back stab with a knife, roll away, and transition to fire arrows, unless you are a master at roll dodging. Once you have full troll gear and bronze shield you can start parry fighting them with difficulty, get iron and it is a cake walk.

Pace your progression, take time to fully develop your base, your crafting bench and forge, and spend some time learning the mobs and how to fight them and you will be rewarded. Rush off ahead under geared and under prepared without either the skill set (player based) or skill level (in game) and you will be punished.

Update:
I just repaired and rebuilt all my broken base pieces, just for my base to get raided by 2 trolls and damaged once again.
