This happens to me when I use my laptop elsewhere and then return home sometimes. Usually I just open the game on my laptop and get a message that my local files and cloud files don't match, so once I select to upload local files, all my progress is returned.

I think I have no problem because I disabled cloud-sync and do my own saves, which I carry over using a USB stick.

Yes, I do it often and it works just fine.

I've not used Cloud for about 8 years now, the same thing used to happen to me playing Grim Dawn.

You can disable the cloud on a per-game basis or globally. Some of the Valheim files can get pretty big so it might take some time to upload to the cloud.

Steam Cloud is universally problematic, always has been, nothing game specific. If you have to use it you should also always manually backup stuff.
