Quick question...
How "early access" is this still? I've heard good things about it, but I've really had my fill of early access jank. Just want an honest opinion. Reviews tend to be vague or hot/cold. If it's reasonably playable, I'm interested. If not, I can wait til release.

To echo some of the thoughts previously, the game is highly playable. If you don't plan on modding (it doesn't sound like you do) you shouldn't experience any game breaking bugs. If you're into survival games - this one has a steep learning curve that is very rewarding to master.

the game plays like a Triple A finished game for the most part though it does have some minor quirks. Theres hundreds of hours of content available right now and its the best bang for the buck youll find anywhere if your in to the survival craft genre.

One note on bugs is that you might have a better time if you turn off steam cloud saves. Usually when someone's save gets messed up, that's the cause.
But personally, I've never had any major bugs show up. This game is remarkably clean in that regard.

Mods are just to change the game play. Not a requirement for the game to run fine. It does run well for an EA game, IMO. Aside from the odd optimisation here and there. My old PC has trouble with only 1 area thus far (the snowstorms in the snow biome).

It's highly playable, with dozens or hundreds of hours of content. I've experienced almost no bugs or crashes in all of my time playing it.

I noticed a comment in another thread where the game bugged out after a patch. Is that pretty common?

No, can't say I've experienced any such issues. I do have a mod installed, and haven't loaded up the game since the patch this morning, so I might run into problems, but I'd attribute it to the mod moreso than the game itself.

I highly recommend Valheim Plus if you want to alter certain aspects of the game for better quality of life features.
If you're first starting out, it's fine to go with the vanilla settings but once you get the hang of the game, there's a lot of things you can change with it that can improve the quality of life to your liking.
Like for instance, Workbenches, they're a common thing you need to create to build in an Area of Effect around it. They also prevent enemies from spawning within it's radius, the default radius is so tiny, you have to create a ton around your base. (and surround them with walls to prevent them from being attacked) It gets rather tedious, so there's a setting in Valheim plus to increase the radius of workbenches so you don't have to build so many for the same effect.

You can even automate smelting and creating coal from wood so less micromanagement is necessary.

There are more structures than just workbenches that block spawns, torches, all other crafting tables, all fire sources, and other player base objects additionally prevent spawns with the same radius as the workbench
