Alternatively you can use the Steam-client server browser to find valheim servers without passwords.
Click on 'View' -> 'Servers'. A server browser window will open.
Click on 'CHANGE FILTERS', select Valheim in the game dropdown and enable the filter option 'Is not password protected'.

That's all I needed to know. I wasn't sure how the multiplayer in this game was set up. I already know how to do a local server, but like joining other community servers or whatever, it's unusual to say the least.

I use gportal and run a dedicated server, it runs 24 hours, so friends can log in whenever they want, it makes a persistent world. You can also do the same thing if you have an extra PC laying around. The server software is included with the purchase of the game. There are guides for setting them up, but if you use a service they do the legwork.

Trust us when we say you do not want a server without a password. All it does is invite trolls who come steal and destroy your stuff.

You are supposed to bring your own friends or family. Or you supposed to use the looking for group forums here or on the official Valheim Discord channel. Or you can ask around on the Valheim Subreddit. Or you can run your own server and advertise it in one of these places. Or you can just run the single player and check "start server" and your friends can join , this option does not require a dedicated server , but friends can only join you while you are playing.

And unless they changed it I do not believe you are forced to use a password. I think you can leave it blank.

But if you are looking to jump into random servers and grief people then it will be difficult.

Odd way to set up a multiplayer system. And yeah, you have to put in a password for a community server.

I don't know what you guys are doing but it blacks out the start button for me unless I put in a 5 character long password.

And every single server it showed had a key icon. Tried dozens and they all required a password to join.

You're trying to join another server then you need to contact them and ask for password.
To host a local game
Just log out of your own sp game and start your own server its free and just like a co op game.,
It loads you into your server at your base.
To host a game locally, either create a new world or choose an existing one, then select the 'Start server' option. Next, you'll be prompted to enter a password and once that's done, click 'Start' to load in.
The Password in your local server is your choice but recomended .

Friends and others can now search for your server under Join Game and enter the password to connect. If no password anyone can join.
To invite your friends who owns the game in chat and friends by giving them your password when they click on Join your game.

Due to the way the world progresses, it's frankly a bad idea to join random servers. Play solo or play (together) with a select group of friends in a coordinated game. I actually think that "join randos in a public server" should not be an option because the game doesn't support it well and it can pretty easily ruin the game for you.

Basically the game has some random base attacks (and, later, basically assassination attempts on your person) that are unlocked as someone (anyone) hits certain milestones in the game. You could join a random server that has already finished the last boss and now you're getting attacked by plains goblins out of nowhere at random because that's what stage the game is on, even though YOU are solo and new.

There's also lots of griefer potential. In summary, don't join random servers. This is a solo / cooperation-with-friends game, not a random server join game.

If you are interested in playing with randoms you can also go to the Looking for group forums.

We used this guide. pretty easy. Friend had a separate box we could use on a good connection.
