boat danger

so.... i built a ship... the medium one.. 80 bronze nails etc. and then it got attacked and blown up but was too far out to retrieve the nails and such off the bottom of the water.
so.... i built a dock out fromt he shore a ways. but still somethign went out during the night or something and blew that ship up too... what the hell..
do i have to just not build a ship or take it apart when im not sailing it to keep it from being lost? seriously. so annoyed.

Maybe a weight issue? If not could be a bug. I have still been breaking down my longship and carrying it over land bridges to a new spot. loved that episode in the vikings tv series...... So yeah, water depth, current inventory slots you have available, and current weigh capacity are a factor. If all those are not the issue I would post to the bugs section.

I broke down my karve multiple times on PT, and the wolves hunting me did it once. I got all my stuff back every time. I don't know what fully repairing it has to do with anything when you're going at it with an ax. You can't break them down the same way you do a building.

Are you running any mods that might alter drops by any chance?

Would be nice if you tell us which biome you're in, if there are any monster spawn points nearby, do you have any kind of protection around the spot you have docked your boat, etc.

At nights more monsters spawn and some of them are going to enter your base if you don't have sufficient protection around it, to destroy things you build.

One thing to counter that is to build an earthwall a bit from your dock, so you can keep them out of the water; another thing is to just make sure nothing spawns there.

And most important, make sure you repair that boat the very next morning as long as you haven't figured out what's destroying it.

If you are in a ship and don't have the gear required to fight a sea serpent (for example) empty enough of your inventory into the ship's cargo hold (or toss stuff you don't really need over board) and make sure that you have enough weight and room in your inventory to hold all materials needed to construct the boat (and make sure you have auto gather turned on) then move to the mast of the boat and bravely meet your fate. When the sea serpent destroys the boat the items in the cargo hold turn into floating crates and the materials that built the boat get autogathered into your inventory and when the sea serpent kills you your corpse floats so you don't lose the materials. If you don't get back to the crates in time they will despawn (3 ish game days) but corpses last until picked up.

Everything in the world attracts mob aggro.
The safest place for a boat is to attack it, grab the drops and put them in storage.

break your boats down on the shore and keep the mats there in a chest. you would think that you could build yourself a nice protected bay for your ships and all would be well but Valheim is more into trolling the player in situations like this

I leave boats on shore all the time. One has been smashed, when I led an abomination right to it. I leave unprotected portals around, too. They have only been wrecked when I led something big right to them.

When the devs add options, I hope letting mobs be more aggressive against your stuff when you're not around, and go through connected portals to attack you inside your base, will be among them.

1. Have a workbench close to your boat.
2. keep your boat in a bit deeper water a bit away from structures or stone bolders/rocks.

The workbench will keep away enemy spawn near by and make easy reapair as one always should do before go sailing and leaving the boat.
Keeping your boat floating in a bit deeper water will prevent the boat hitting the bottom and take damage even if there is a little bigger waves.

Boats take damage from mobs, big waves, and bumping into terrain/structures. Store boats near your shoreline so you can pick up resources if a storm destroys it. Otherwise, you sign up for any risks associated with deep water.

so here was "my fix" for my boat dock.
https://postimg.cc/bdG3GcCT

i basically put a teleport out on a tiny rock island in the water from my base named 'dock'.
nothing comes out here.
i plan to put a roof on it.
