Black forest can be pretty chill place to live, once you've moved in and pacified the area the greydwarves aren't that bad. I've never moved in next to the trader though, I just drop a portal.

Drop the greydwarves in a hole and/or put some campfires around. That will make it quieter.

Not really, besides the fact he's in the Black Forest, and therefore you'll perpetually have greydwarfs as nosey neighbors.

You'd be better off making your main base in the meadows, and building a small shack with a teleporter in it next to him.

You have a good amount. It would be worth it.

A variety of things are only available from the trader so you eventually need to find him anyway. Those include a few items and several ingredients. The quickest way to find him is to sail along the coasts of black forest biomes. He is generally near the shore in a special warded 'bubble' that protects him and you while transacting business. You will know you found him when a small 'sack' icon appears in your mini-map. He has multiple spots where he *can* appear but the first place you find him becomes his permanent unique location. Those locations are generally midway or a bit less to the world edges so it takes some searching.

You exchange the non-coin treasure for coin and then purchase things with coin. There is also a placeable item you can make using several items called a treasure chest that is decorative only and two(?) variants of coin piles to scatter around. That's the only other use of treasure AFAIK.

You can also use surplus treasure as decor in your base.

The things he sells are optional, but very very useful. He can sometimes show up on the starting island, provided it's big enough, or he can be very difficult to find. It is definitely worth spending the time to look.

Yes, you'll get a map marker when you get close enough during exploration.

Yes, there is a trader. You can find him somewhere in the Black Forest. You just have to search around them until you find him. Once you've found him, he stays there forever, so consider building a portal nearby. His list of purchasable items increases as you kill new bosses.
