Every Troll Cave I've cleared out has never once Respawned a Troll.
I'm over 600days in.

I never killed a troll in close combat in a cave but a cave became empty somehow.

The caves are a separate instance in the game, just like the burial chambers and crypts as they are not part of the open world. Personally that's something I like because it means that resources in some areas are finite and you have to get creative if you deplete them entirely.

Empty troll cave means one of two things; either it's resident has been killed within the cave or it's a cave that spawns it's resident outside occasionally. I have also had instances where I've killed a troll directly outside and it's mate was inside the cave as well - this was probably just coincidences due to how the game spawns mobs near to you.

I know but the entrance itself is part of the world. That entrance could be made to look different.
But we would still have the transition loading screen when we enter or leave.

I dont think you can build inside the caves either!

In my experience, the troll caves work like the crypts. Once you clear them they don't respawn. I've been back to nearly all the caves that I've cleared and no trolls are ever at home. Trolls will always spawn wherever outside though like normal mobs, though.

No they dont respawn in the caves just yellow mushrooms after that.

if you put workbench near trollcave he wont spawn anymore, thats what i did, 40 days no troll spawn near me only from raid

my gang and i built a whole base right next to a troll cave. we named him mike. hes a quiet neighbor
