Just...like the 'cart', built one to evaluate...immediately stored it under an elevated base and use it for 'Storage' now, for that, it is useful...not as intended by the Devs, though.

Mine fires downwards enough for my needs, picks off the fulings just fine.

Same here. I also have a trench/moat around my base with traps set inside to catch those who are fast enough to evade the Ballista. I do wish there was a "Shoot everything but me" trophy" I could put on them. Ah well.

I managed to kill a 2-Seeker night patrol with it, but only by running back and forth in front of the ballista to keep them in the cone until it put about 3-4 bolts into each. I set up a few in my enclave in case they got over the wall, but it's not a very practical defense.

Targeting options are limited, but that is by design. You can add monster trophies to them to make them only shoot at specific things iirc.

I've not progressed legitimately far enough to make use of a ballistas, but it's my understanding that they aren't terribly accurate, so they are way better off only shooting at large and slow monsters; like the Gjall or whatever it's called. Having it elevated enough to not shoot at ground things should be considered a plus, as it also won't shoot at you.

is this a post patch change? It worked before, but within limits. It has a cone it can fire into.

even a laser gun turret has mechanical limitations :-) imagine a crude ballista.. i just miss some more control though..like un-loading bone to put better missiles in..targeting options like no-players etc.,
