world save just...gone?!?!?

so i came back for the mistlands update, and was working for like a week or two on a world wherein me and my buddies could just hop in and start on mistlands.
it's gone. two weeks of building and map charting, gone. I've checked my cloud storage, checked valheim's local storage and there's nothing. Please help, i don't want to give up on valheim but i have 0 want to farm up all the resources and rebuild everything i lost after spending two weeks prepping for mistlands.
i transferred all my resources to this world, I was finally making progress on getting ready or mistlands....and now the world, which I named thexnewxworld, is gone, only with my old legacy world and a preprep world which disappeared beforehand and i had to begin over again. please.

VH keeps backups on its own (worlds and character profiles). Per default up to 4 which means 6 in total:
<YourWorldName>.db/.fwl
<YourWorldName>.db/.fwl.old
4x <YourWorldName>_backup_auto-<ISO-DateTime>.db/.fwl

I have no idea what you did but I'm pretty sure neither VH or Steam would delete all those files on their own.
And if they did the first thing to try is just restoring those files[1] - but it's probably to late for that now.

And you're sure none of those backups is/are anywhere in
OLD: %USERPROFILE%\AppData\LocalLow\IronGate\Valheim\worlds NEW: %USERPROFILE%\AppData\LocalLow\IronGate\Valheim\worlds_local CLOUD: ...\Steam\userdata\<YourSteamUserID?>\892970\remote\worlds
With maybe different Windows/Steam users?

Steam cloud full? Local drive full?

And I'm reasonably sure that VH (or any other game) doesn't interact directly with the Steam cloud.
It only stores/loads the save states from the local cloud folder (and maybe triggers the Steam client to sync that folder).

Oh and you can do lightning quick global search in Windows over all drives with some tools.[2] In case you accidentally moved some folder...

[1] there's a bunch of un-delete/recover tools available. Eg. Altap Salamander (v4.0) has this functionality + maybe Recuva?

[2] I know off Everything[www.voidtools.com] and UltraSearch[www.jam-software.com]. They don't crawl through the actual drives/folders/files, just the NTFS MFTs (or equivalent if possible).

...dude stop coping, we all know steam cloud is ass, i've lost countless hours to its buggy mess of synchronization. yes, i searched all 3 directories. it was my fault having cloud enabled

Who? IronGate? They only implemented the worlds_local + cloud save stuff to please some users where a mixture of different SteamIDs where used on the same local Windows account (or some other wired combinations).

It worked perfectly fine & as intended before but they changed it several times before the first normal release just to enable some unexpected use-cases.
But yeah, "they don't care"...

Always backup your saves if you're uncomfortable with starting from scratch. Weird ♥♥♥♥ happens very infrequently at the OS and hardware level that game developers have trouble dealing with, precisely because it's so infrequent they don't get to observe it, and the Steam cloud layer adds an additional source of potential errors.

Ok here goes..I might ask MODS :-)that we assemble and get this pinned as a topic. (incase its incomplete :-) )

So world files are in 3 (at least places)

1) Single Player using January 2023 versions and beyond
C:\Users\***\AppData\LocalLow\IronGate\Valheim\worlds_local

2) Single Player using Steam cloud saves here
https://store.steampowered.com/account/remotestorage

3) now Single Player and Multi Player ALSO apparently save to here:
C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\userdata\yourSteamIDnumber\892970\remote

Good luck and Skall!

Sorry no idea. I turned of cloud storage and backup my local saves just in case.

If you can't restore your save you can always spawn in a stuff so you don't have to start from zero again.
