Can I live in the mountains?
I mean a sustainable life. Can I grow food there or what can I grow? I'm trying to have The Long Dark experience here. If anyone tried or succeeded living in the mountains, please let me know.
Thanks in advance!

African swallows? or Indian?... check the ears!!Coconuts also do not grow everywhere
Who wants to eat bread, must plant the barley just in the plains ...
That's what we need. Coconuts, and swallows (the bird), and the Knights of Ni some where in the forest as well.

I used to have my main base and portal farm in the mountains. With portals, location is irrelevant, and your "base" can be scattered all across the world. Want to grow some barley? Cultivate some ground in the plains, build a wall around it (or not), plop down a portal, and you're all set.
My favorite part of having a mountain base is bringing new players there and watching them climb the stairs to the exposed deck. They don't stay up there very long. :-)

You would need to fudge it a little by saying that those snow covered biome borders count.

You can totally do it. Every food is technically a luxury but the mountains has everything you would need to hold a piece of wolf meat over a fire. That would be where the challenge and the roleplay of such a ruleset meets in the middle. No microwave meals or takeaways for you.
Agreed. But the restriction doesn't feel as forced as it does pointless. The farm yields have no teleport restriction and even if many of us prefer to ban ourselves from world-hopping, it's in the game by design. The farming restriction makes things neither more difficult or more easy. The very fact that the restriction is so logistically inconsequential is what makes it feel like a nuisance. That's actually one thing I don't like. The mountain is such a cool biome but there is very little reason to build a base there. OTOH I'm not a big fan of the flax/barley restriction to force people to settle in the plains. Feels forced.

You can't grow any thing there but you can hunt wolves for meat and chop trees to feed the fire so that you can cook it.

If your goal is to live there and never leave there are obviously resources you wouldn't be able to get.
I think you could obviously make it work. You would have to do without some end game food.

Depends on your play-style.
If you are using portals, except for metals, location doesn't really matter much. If you place an outpost in the mountains for silver processing/manufacturing, you might as well turn it into a base with max comfort, decent storage, maintain repair level crafting, have your cooking/fermenting there.. everything except farms, ranches, ports, and metal manufacturing - which can all be done at portal accessible remote locations.
The benefits, besides aesthetics, would be event related - only raids would be wolves and bats... may or may not be a good thing once Mistlands hits.

no honey...! in a bees dont like mountains kinda way :-) But in a more serious mode.. yes sure just set up remote farms.. for whatever your pleasure.. yes plains are needed as mentioned earlier.... just explore and find a plains you can dominate and de-mob ..Castles are military types of buildings with sightlines height etc and irl spawned villages nearby with food, mead, farming.. perfectly natural really

You can't grow food in the mountains, so that's that. But you CAN have a portal in your mountain fortress to a farm in the meadows or plains and grow food THERE.
Just as a suggestion. ;)

If you can find a bit of plains at the bottom of a mountain, you can make use of it that way.

You can RP the remote farm as a "Hidden Valley" only accessible through your fortress. Heck its one of the few times in the game where you could go nuts with raised earth walls and deep pit. Farm in the pit, keep the walls irregular and as steep as possible, use cultivator 'grass' setting to change the look of the raised walls a bit.
Plus points for doing that on a border between Mountain and Meadows.
Sounds fun :)
PS: Also might need to do that with a Plains/Mountain border as well.
