What armor and weapons to use for The Elder?
I am 29.7 hours in and will probably take on the Elder soon. I currently have Troll hide tunic and pants (Upgraded once) and un-upgraded troll hide headwear and a upgraded thrice deer hide cape. I also have an upgraded twice bronze sword, upgraded once bronze buckler and upgraded twice finewood bow.
Is that going to be enough or do I need to upgrade more?
Don't spoil too much (Such as things in the next biomes)

over 1800 hours played here and I have never found a reason to make the Bronze Armor set.
Once you can make bronze, it only takes 3 bronze bars to upgrade your bench to lvl 4 (giving you access to upgrade Troll Armor to lvl 3).
Level 3 Troll Armor gives 10 Armor rating, +15 to sneak (with cape) its lighter (set weights 11.4 pounds) and has NO movement penalty.
To match level 3 troll armor, you'd need to upgrade bronze to lvl 2, you'd incur a 15% movement penalty, and the set weights 23 pounds.
4 iron bars and 4 obsidian allow you to upgrade your workbench again, allowing for max lvl 4 troll armor. This gives you 12 armor per piece, matching level 3 bronze, WITHOUT the weight and speed penalty.
I concentrate on maximizing my troll armor, my bronze mace, Axe, and buckler and skip bronze armor altogether. This with poison resist potion will be plenty to get you farming iron for your iron set.
With lvl 4 Troll amor, lvl 3 bronze mace/axe/buckler/lvl 4 finewood bow you'll do well in the swamp.
To put things in perspective further... Level 4 Troll armor (with cape) has a combined armor rating of 40. Your tier 1 IRON set will have a combined armor rating of 46. I don't even bother making my iron set until I know I have enough iron bars to upgrade it to lvl 3.
Until you upgrade Iron you'll hardly notice the difference (but you'll notice the weight and runspeed penalty for sure)
You can keep your lvl 4 Troll set indefinitely as it is really good for light duty farming.

there is no real reason to craft any bronze item other than the axe to get fine wood. bow + fire arrows + troll armor + staying close to the elder so that he doesnt use his ranged attack will make the elder a piece of cake

The Bronze buckler, has 2.5 parry bonux vs the 1.5x parry bonus of the wood shield, and it has a vastly superior block armor rating than the wood shield.
Very helpful in the swamp w/ the skellies and draugrs.
I also love a lvl 3 bronze mace asap since I love maces and they are awesome against skellies and blobs (which are weak to blunt).

Your gear sounds fine to me. I don't bother maxing my items and skip bronze armour as collecting all that copper is a chore.
Take plenty of fire arrows, use the pillars for cover and pick him off from a distance.
Make sure to eat your best foods.

Fire arrows work well, if you can a full set of Troll, then just slide and dive when fighting, use the pillars to hide behind he can not destroy them.

I personally enjoy maxing out each armour/tool/weapon set to the max before proceeding to kill the boss. It's not necessary, I just like to minimize risks and feel like I've 'completed' that biome before moving on to the next.
So i fought the Elder with maxed out Bronze armour (chest and legs), maxed out Troll Cape and Hood and maxed out Finewood bow.
But I'm quite certain you'd be fine with the gear you have...although there is no way to take into account your combat skills (in-game character stats and real life person skills)

Fire always help with tree-like creatures. So use fire arrows. You can also set a bunch of campfires around his spawn place to set him on fire when he steps on it :)

Elder is about timing and reacting tbh, get your best food, and brews and perhaps a spare bow.

I'm with Karma.
I usually just play till I can't upgrade anymore ... I think you can get Troll upgraded to lvl 3 without Iron.
I am usually rocking lvl 3 bronze axe, mace, and buckler as well.
At that point Elder is a cakewalk.

200 fire arrows and a finewood bow is all that is required to kill the elder, no need to max out anything (collecting that much bronze will make you hate yourself anyway)
His attacks can combo you for decently significant damage so I’d say play the careful route and just pick him off from behind the stone pillars till he’s dead.

For elder all you really need is stamina food, an upgraded crude bow and ~50 fire arrows.
Keep juking him around the pillars, use them as cover and it's gg.

Your equipment is enough regardless of how you choose to take him on. Troll-skin set would allow quite a lot of damage through if you won't be vigilant to block the attacks with the buckler tho, so either go for a bronze armor set, rely on healing potions to recover, or make sure you're confident in your blocking and dodging skills.
