Why is the .old save only FIVE minutes old? DO NOT TERRAFORM.

Like I get that it's something, but 5 minutes accounts for almost no changes in the scope of an 8 hour gaming session for example.

Just had a thing where our world bugged out and all the terrain reset to default position. While googling about it, found someone mentioning how there is a '.old' backup save... go to check for it, its only 5 minutes before the most recent save so not sure how that helps.

I'm so ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ annoyed that our 100+ hours of progress is just ruined from this issue.

So yeah I recommend not relying on terraforming as a functioning factor to your bases. Could just reset one day :D

It sucks when stuff like this happens, lost well over 150+ hours on our server from the world destroyer bug way back when. Doesn't really fix anything now, but I recommend doing a manual backup after you have performed a large amount of work. Enable view hidden items, Users>Username>AppData>LocalLow>IronGate. You'll find the Valheim save folder here and can make backups of both your world and character files.

Sorry I wasn't super clear in the main post... but yeah our base had a lot of terraforming involved. Like digging out the side of a hill for a nice longhouse, and overall just shaping the area for roads and whatnot. Flattening some areas for buildings to be placed (not extreme like 100m deep digs, but still something).

So yeah, all that terraforming suddenly reverted today, thus burying most of our base half into the ground.

The game saves on each periodic world save, on disconnection, and also (presumably) on death. Now, you know what to expect from those save files. The .old save is only the previous save. It can well be 5 minutes old if you disconnect 5 minutes after a world save.

If you manually copy those save files elsewhere, when you can restore a much older game state, in case of a reset.

Yeah now I know... :( Would have been nice to know before. I've just never needed backups in a game before. Not unless the game loaded up with a warning saying as such "Hey this game is unstable and may crash or corrupt, please make backups of your save". I've seen games share such warnings, but Valheim doesn't. I DO realize it is still in Early Access, but given how stable the game usually is, I was under the impression the game was just that... stable under normal circumstances. You'd think making use of the hoe or pick axe is normal circumstance.
