Am I using the Fenris set wrong?

So I've got the full set as well as the claws, but much to my chagrin I'm having trouble putting any of it to good use. It obviously has far worse defense than wolf armor which was much easier to come across, and the damage output and block of the claws just doesn't hold a candle to a sword and shield. Is there a good place to use this?

The best way to look at the situation in my opinion is to understand that comparing the fenris to an iron armor set is a false equivalency fallacy issue.

Other than the plains, all biomes have 2 sets of armors: a light set and a heavy set. This allows for different kinds of play styles and play functions.

Therefore, your having an expectation of the fenris set to be equal to an iron one is a mistake per your expectations. To give a loose analogy, this would be like comparing a bike to a truck. While both are modes of transportation, both have different functions and necessities of use by most people.

Use of the set will depend on you. Some, who prefer a run and shoot or sneak or dodge and hit style game play and using such in the plains(where there are fire using mobs) may find better use of it. Others who just want a set to run faster while moving between some locations limitedly may use it. Some who just want a nice set to put on a stand as a collectible may see it only for that purpose.

Per your comments, it seems like the set is of less use to you overall due to your preferred play style perhaps.

One issue with Fenris armor is that it takes a lot of resource and rng to be able to craft / level it up. Swamps are much easier to find then Frost Caves and if you get a good one the iron is very easy to stock up (despite it being used in a lot more ways).

I wish the night time werewolves and ulvs could have a chance to drop fur and that cultists spawned in cauldron event.

Using it for travel is a good point. I guess my only contention is that the armor does very little to actually defend you from fast enemies or ranged attacks. I suppose that's the tradeoff for the speed though.

the extra speed allows you to simply step away from attacks you would otherwise have to block or roll away from.. it's a phenomenal tactical boost given the fact that stamina spent on defense is stamina that you can't then use for attack.. if you can simply step aside because of your natural footspeed, nothing really has a chance against you.. and you can also then wield large, heavy weapons without being an easy target..

Claws actually worked pretty well against Yagluth though the Fenris armor at that point lacks the defense needed against his blunt trauma attacks - even the fire damage resistance on that armor isn't that good against him.

Using the armor though is good for more easily staying ahead of trouble though I'd keep root armor for pierce/poison resistance in going through plains or swamps.

I'd have to wonder at your unarmed skill too as that wont be as levelled as main weapon skills.... I've found it to be more than acceptable for parrying and killing anything with only 35 unarmed. Yet to test against starred enemies but its been very worthwhile in all biomes for me so far. Except loxes... cos screw those tanky PoS :D They are what BM Atgeirs were built for.

It's nice as a travel weapon too with no move penalty even when weapon is drawn. Makes popping squitos v. easy.
unarmed dont give more parrying with fist just damage and stamina use .... That its blocking skill that give more parrying/blocking with everything

Sorry that was two isolated thoughts running together. I know the parry is governed by block, but OP also mentioned lacking damage which... same rules as all weapons, gotta train to the same skill before comparing. :D

Yea I have a character who trained to level 50 unarmed by using shields for heavy retaliation damage which simultaneously leveled my blocking. Punching trolls to death.

Max armor for the caves, and highest level armor for most other things. Armor has extremely high value and it's not worth missing out in most situations.

Fenris pants are the best piece simply because there's no other pants alternative. The chest piece competes with pierce resistance on the root set, and the helmet offers less speed benefit overall.

Utilize that extra speed the Fenris has to simply run out of range. I personally feel it's more for stealth and evasion.

Was having fun trolling trolls with it. Whack them, run out of range, rinse and repeat. Even the 4 Greydwarves in pursuit while fighting the trolls couldn't hit me.
