Is most of the game play in the dark?
all videos, and most of the screenshots i've seen all look like the lighting is sooo dark. Is there an option to turn off night time settings? i wont buy this game if most of the game play is dark lighting.....it strains the eye, is annoying and does not make it more realistic at all...

bowl of porridge, hot cuppa tea and a day off from work. Time to give this game it's second try :)

You're not wrong about the control clunk, Skyrimming over rough terrain feels like playing Marble Madness sometimes and I find myself muttering that legs don't work like that. The rest of the game is worth the aggro but if someone puts out a stable footing mod I'll never look back.

The only thing I don't like the night time is that it does get rather spooky. Greydwarves, these largely harmless little ankle biters you encounter early on have glowing eyes that you will see from a distance at night.

Nighttime is actually proper darkness which should make players afraid and be forced to use one offhand for torches or basically light up the base. If you're new, keep to the coast line and build an initial base close to your first spawn. Make sure you don't go wandering off in the dark because greydwarves spawn more frequently at night. And stay within the meadow biome until you are sufficiently prepared to head into dark forest.

I'd say you should try again. The textures are not so good but the ambience, lighting, fog, all create an awesome atmosphere.
At the beggining can be harder, but once you get the hang of it is really good, the grinding exists but is not too boring. Having to build everything you need and want the way you want is really cool :)Rushing in this game does lead to frustration. I restarted last night and decided to rush the first boss (who now looks much cooler than I remember). My combat skill ratings were very low, weapons and armor that weren't upgraded, the only thing I had going for me was that I had figured out food (for me two meat and something sweet)- died about four times.
I just purchased again £12, i just need to commit to it for a good 10 hours i think to get right into it. I don't mind grind i find gathering resources relaxing but i think it was the textures, very dark nights and clunky mouse clicks to chop trees that turned me off.
Anyway both your comments tipped me over into a second non-refundable purchase so i better make the most of it :)
Nice, give it a couple hours and you will have a blast.
I started a new world and character yesterday and played 15 hours since :D
Only now with a few bronze weapons and going to kill second boss. When playing solo i'll keep the Troll set until i go to the iron armor, i don't think is worth the grind to go full bronze armor when playing solo.

I play both solo and with my wife. I have gone full Troll and full Bronze in both solo and with my wife. I find going coop full bronze way more of a grind than doing it solo. Also full bronze solo I didn't think was such a grind.
Just goes to show that this game can be played a lot of different ways and they are all fun.

21 minutes of daytime, 9 minutes of nightime.
You see a lot of night screenshots because they show off the dynamic lighting.

No, there are night /day cycles and you can sleep in a bed in the evenings to skip ahead to the next morning. The lighting is beautiful in the daytime and there's zero reason you'd need to be foraging or fighting at night.

When the sun goes down it's dark.
Thats realistic.
You can sleep to skip the night.
Realistic too.
You can not see well in the dark.
Sounds realistic to me.
Hmmm, so maybe make a bed?

I originally refunded the game a couple months ago within the 2 hour window for 3 reasons.
1. I found the controls a little bit clunky
2. I found the textures off putting i instantly started looking for HD mods
3. I found myself in the early game struggling to get the basics out of the way before nightfall and it got so dark at night it was frustrating. It didn't feel very friendly at first or ease you in.
With that said, i watch this game like a hawk and i keep asking myself "if it's got so many overwhelming reviews from literally hundreds of thousands of players, i must be wrong in my assessment".
I'm tempted to buy again and just commit to it instead of rushing my first 2 hours to determine if i should refund it. I love survival games, i played Conan Exiles to death on multiple platforms.
With the small discount on offer right now it's almost worth it to push through for 1 weekend and love or hate it after that it's probably got me my monies worth since i'll probably spend more than the cost of the game down the pub tonight in less than 1 hour lol

I enjoy the game. I would say get it again and give it a good go.
I play it solo, also with my wife and now with my grandson. My grandson is a bit young for the game so it's a bit of a chore but hey he's my grandson. Anyway back to topic.
My advice is as you're running around pick up stones, wood, berries and mushrooms and eat said berries and mushrooms. I make a club, an axe and a hammer in that order. Cut down a tree or two for more wood on your travels or chop up the logs you see on the ground. Most important stay in the meadows.
Try to find the coastline and find a place to set up some very basic shelter. All you need is a crafting table with 3 walls immediately behind it and 3 x 45 degree roof pieces coming off those walls and over your crafting table. Place a fire down and you're set for the night. It will be a long boring wait till daylight though. With a bit more wood you can make a bed (needs to be sheltered like the table) and sleep away the night. If you killed animals and have meat place 2 cooking racks over the fire and cook your meat. Keep an eye on it as it will burn and turn into coal.
After that explore find a place you really want to settle, make a hoe, level the land and begin your real journey.
