What is stopping them from making vertical ladders?

For me it is such a must have and obvious addition, I just don't understand why they would never consider this

I don't mind how they currently implement the ladders on the boats, I like if they just let us build that one little ladder so we can click to teleport above and slightly in front of it

There was one airship mod I tried a long time ago, and it had really long vertical ladders. We attached with "E" and climbed up or down with "W" or "S". The animation was crude but okay. I don't see why someone would think these things are impossible.

I built my own vertical ladder, at least one that will allow me to go up 3 meters to the next floor.

One cannot climb player-constructed vertical walls, either stone or wooden. One can, however, attach one-meter horizontal wooden beams to an existing wall to provide hand- or footholds so one may scale a vertical wall. One must use the same sprint-jump technique one uses to scale very steep slopes.

Upon reaching the upper floor, one must jump off to the side. It takes a bit of practice. The game uses the same animation it uses when scaling very steep slopes.

To be fair, ladders are either broken or "needlessly complex" in pretty much all 3D games. It seems that snapping into the "climbing a ladder" position and changing the control scheme to one that won't fling you off the ladder into empty space "for no reason" is difficult... as is detecting when the player wants to actually use the ladder.

The best one I've ever seen was in Team Fortress Classic; I'm fairly certain it was based on proximity to the ladder, causing you to snap onto the ladder if you got close to it. If I recall correctly, the controls were adjusted so that moving "toward the ladder" was "up", and "away from the ladder" was "down", while requiring the user to press "jump" to let go of the ladder.

Some games that have ladders require the user to press the "use" button to "attach to the ladder", and climbing either "feels bad" or is so slow as to make it faster to go around the ladder and use whatever ramps or jumping puzzle gets the player there without having to interact with the ladder.

Other games that use proximity-based ladder sensing often get slammed by the playerbase for grabbing onto the ladder while running past it; when it comes to ladders that "feel good" to use, it really does seem to be hit-or-miss.

It should also be noted that my "best example I can remember from 40+ years of playing video games" still had the occasional weirdness when releasing from the ladder, occasionally (maybe one time in 20) flinging your character 20-30 feet in a random direction when you let go of it.

TL;DR: Vertical ladders in 3D games are apparently hard. The few games that implement them have wonky behavior, and or require an immersion-breaking "mode shift" to "ladder climbing mode".

What key press would make your viking climb up a ladder? What key press would make your viking climb down a ladder?

Moving up or down a vertical ladder would require a viking to use both hands and feet. Would things one is carrying in one's hands (shield, weapon or tool) be automatically put away or would one have to consciously unequip them? What about re-equipping them?

Why don't you ask them? Since you know that "they would never consider this," you must have a more direct means of communicating with them than the Steam forum. Why don't you use it?

Up. Or W.

Down. Or S.

That was simple.

They could grab onto it with "E".

[EDIT] As for equipping and re-equipping...Have you ever fallen into the water?

[EDIT 2] Meant to put "W" and "S".

These are the part of the efforts on making these features, as in making any video game

"E" to go up or down depending on what end of the ladder you're pointing to - just like pretty much all other interactions in the game.

And automatically putting things away is already supported, it happens when your viking ends up in deeper water. These are all non-issues.

I hate those 45 degree ladders, and would more than welcome vertical ones.

There are a dozen animations for emotes, and they have added them over time, which are only of any use in multiplayer or screenshots, so I see no reason why a single animation for climbing ladders could not be added.

Interactable by pressing E. Much like how you "teleport" into bed. W to go up, S to go down. Is that hard to understand ?

I recall devs saying they would not be putting a ladder in for various reasons, cant remember why though or where.

Subnautica has a functional, but lazy, ladder system. Like others have mentioned, you could just allow the player to press E and teleport up to the top of the ladder.

I would be very curious to see the reasons. It seems like such a simple thing to add.

I fear this is as close to an answer as the OP is likely to get, at this date, from Iron Gate Studio.

Having given its reasons for not having vertical ladders once, Iron Gate Studio has moved on. One could search Discord discussions, social media discussions, and the development blog on Steam if one cannot understand why vertical ladders are not in the game.

Of course, one would actually have to make an effort to do so.

Need animations at least. Maybe also interactions with other elements?
