Why does this game not have a feeding trough?

Maybe I am doing something wrong here, but I have a boar pen. There are a dozen pigs in there. I find it irritating that I have to throw down carrots for them to eat and when I come back to check up on them, it just goes into my inventory.

Just throwing a stack of 50 carrots on the ground like its discarded seems silly.

Is there a better way to do things?

I don't think you played ARK where you basically put a trough down, put food in it and walk away. Baiscally works like a chest but you see it full when its full.

Just seems weird to me that I have to make a pretend box in game like lego and discard carrots into it. It doesn't stop the carrots from auto going into inventory next time I am there.

Oh I know what the Ark trough is like, but this is not ark. You have plenty of building parts to make one of your own.

Just a reminder, I played ark for research, not gaming purposes.

But we're talking about 7000+ year-old technology. Our trusty vikings should know how to make one.

Another word for an animal feeding trough is manger - so maybe this is an anti-Christian thing. We'll all have to be baptised first! ;P

Why not make one out of the available parts?

Mods hold the answers for you my friend, there are two sites that do them for Valheim.
And just quality of life stuff is super well done, such as extra snap angles on building, having the ability to cultivate any type of plant or tree, and using tools while swimming to help clear shallow rivers for your boat.

When I remember I just hit 'v' to toggle auto-pickup on/off. But I rarely remember unless I'm working in the area

Hit submit too early....
I do agree - the Ark style of a pen makes total sense.

Here's an idea, don't walk over the carrots after you throw them on the ground.

throw them where you won't walk. You can enforce that by making some sort of thingy for it. Use the 1x1 wood walls to make a little box, a roof tile or slanted beams to guide something you throw to fall in a good place, whatever you like. All it has to do is land where they can eat it -- you can make a plinko board or whatever to get it there.

It might be nice to have a prefab part for it eventually. Maybe run off moder tears.

I highly suggest looking on youtube at various breeding pen designs as there are a couple where it is less of an issue or none at all depending on which design you choose. It wont alleviate the picking back up but the designs mean that your proximity to where you toss the food is such that the chance to accidentally pick it back up would be very rare.

But really its a very minor QoL issue currently. It takes all of a few seconds to redrop the food and be on your way.

True its not ARK but having to make a box and throw stuff in doesnt make sense...a feeding trough isnt just ARK, its literally how animals eat usually.

I thought planting carrots might work and that doesn't.

True its just a small quality of life thing, but also maybe a days work for devs to implement it.

It's not just MY issue though, when I have people playing on my server - they aren't avid gamers and they don't realise they have auto picked up the food while looking at my little farm. Haha it's so annoying when I go "carrots back please", its just an annoyance and a reminder I shouldn't really have to do.

As stated before, I do have a pen and a little box for food but people still pick it up. I tried all sorts of ideas but the issue is at the games design level.

My OP was basically asking if there was one in the game or not or if i was doing something wrong.
