New or old world? I found a tarpit right away in my new world. I haven't looked in my old worlds yet, but they should only be where no one has mapped yet.

Gotta make sure the plains are atleast outside all player/s explored areas from about 3 fog radiuses

Just as a word of caution. Don't go near them under-prepared. Those tar slimes will ♥♥♥♥ up your day

Found one literally in the first plains I've found, being literally by the border between the plains and the black forest I've walked out from.

Tip: They do not appear until you're close enough(you won't see a black spot before actually closing in on it).

I've been to one and seen one, they killed me right quick
