That is a tragic story.

I don't know if this can help, but there is a mod that helps upgrading already explored parts of the world after an update. As you know, you have to assume that the already explored parts may get "corrupted" by an update (normally they are not), or at the very least won't benefit from new features from the update. This mod is loaded once after an update and then removed after the game is saved and exited. Save your data before using it!
