bad FPS
How is it that I have a 2080 Super running 1080p and only getting 20 or less FPS. Meanwhile, my cousin is running a 1080 at 4k and getting 70 FPS? I even matched his graphic settings minus the 4k and it was worse.

Last weekend, my newer pc, had a glitch, fixed now, so I tried running it on my 7 year old system, which is just above min spec with the gpu, gtx980m, has a quad core, and to my surprise, Valheim ran well, with some settings reduced, like shadows etc, and some effects turned off. That said, it was in the early game, so no building projects or terra forming, or large in game storage.
By comparison, my newer system is an 8 core, and while the gpu, rtx2080, runs fine, 4 cores get busy, with most settings on high. Tbf, the cpu needs thermal pasting, and is a bit overdue.
I'm awaiting delivery of some liquid metal paste, and keeping sliders in the middle, in game graphic settings, to try to keep the temperature in the sweet spot, for now.
In time the game will get optimised, until then, no shame in reducing settings, or tweaking your game and or system accordingly, at least from my limited experience, it is very playable, as it is.
VIP854, on paper you should be doing better than me, with a 2080 Super, I'm sure you know about CPUID Hardware monitor, or similar, have you checked your cpu temps / utilization while in game?

I will have a further look into this, thanks for sharing, I had come across the ' -window- mode exclusive', I need to look a bit further Optimization is kind of an on-going work through a games development, usually the bulk of it is done at the end just before retail release but some can be included in content releases or hot-fixes... it tends to be an incremental process though up till full release.
However, there is a quick pass of tweaks you can do pretty easily may be helpful to getting your computer to work around the CPU load the game currently can cause in certain situations - https://www.reddit.com/r/valheim/comments/lizxq9/valheim_fps_fix_benchmark_picture_guide_gained_an/
When I did these I went from 4 FPS in my village (it was like playing in stop motion lmao) to 70 - 90 pretty evenly.
Hopefully that helps for now :) & Don't worry! Things will improve as the rest of the game content gets built & released over time :) this is just a temp work-around.
Edit: Dropped a word & had to pick it up & put it where it belonged.
But I will defo remove raspberries from my in game item bar, :-)

Hello VIP854.
I am not sure why, but something with the 2000 series Nvidia cards makes them have worse performance than 1000 and 3000 series GPU with Valheim.
I have been trying to test this for a long while, but it always seems to be diffrent issues with each card, (2060,2070,2080) and each manufactures (MSI, Asus, etc.)
This video is one we post alot on discord when users are having bad FPS and some get helped by it =)

Thank you Smiffe, I will take a look at that too, I hope this helps VIP854 and others, I was just reading up on 'Latcadys' link to reddit and clearly lots of happy campers there too, thanks to RustyB3ans.
I mentioned above, I may have been lucky, my gpu seems ok, good temps, and doesn't seem to be working that hard. The cpu on the other hand, I need to fix, and I'm sure that is - re the thermal paste etc.
Much appreciated
Cheers

It seems like every day there's a post about this exact thing, and I think Rooks01 and Latcady pretty much covered the reason.
In the end it really is all about the fact that it's an EA game and unoptimized - or more specifically not optimally optimized. Some computers seem to run it just fine, mine does and I've got an older setup, but some people have state of the art machines and still struggle to hit 40-50 fps.
Just tuning the graphics settings a bit helped me (biggest help was to turn shadows down), plus the double alt-enter trick which apparently forces the game into true fullscreen mode. Yes, it's as simple as it sounds. Hit alt-enter, you'll go to windowed mode. Hit it again, you'll go to fullscreen mode.

Our best guess is that the game hasn't been optimized in any way. No matter what the system is, it struggles once you have a lot of items (all those full chests we got boiiiii) in a small area. Our seagulls don't fly half the time near our base, just stop in mid air, and our buildings aren't even that serious. It'll be smooth sailing at 60 fps in the ocean, then we turn the bend into our camp and BOOM, it's like playing on a comodor.
