Full Controller Support

So, when I read "Full Controller Support", I make the assumption that I don't need any other sort of input to do anything within the game.

I find unfortunately, that "Full Controller Support" often means "you can't type anything in as we didn't make a virtual keyboard".

Which is Valheim please?

Agreed, hybrid is best...alphaNumeric input AND hotkeys...wish controller devices had a few more buttons for hotkeys.

Same. I use the mouse for precision positioning (such as when building or farming) and I still use the keyboard for the hotbar keys and a few other things, but for combat and general movement, I find my controller to be much easier and more comfortable to use.

There are only a few uses for typing in text anyway, aside from your name: in-game chat, sign-text, portal-tags, and map-markers (optional text).

I play with controller. Funny thing is that now that I'm playing with no map and no portals, the only text entry left is the rare sign I might make (well, and name at character creation time). Even so, when I am using a map I don't add text anyway to keep the map clear -- there are enough icon varieties for my needs.

I really prefer the controller when it comes to movement during combat; also the view direction is separate from character facing which is handy (eg. looking around while mining).

I believe "Full Controller Support" means that they're using the Steam controller API, so it should work the same as other Steam games with "Full Controller Support".

I run in desktop mode and use a keyboard for the minimal amount of text input required, but I'm pretty sure that you would get an on-screen keyboard in big picture mode, although I have not tried it.

I think there was something in the update where they made the game Steam Deck ready that says a virtual keyboard would be available on PC if started in Steam Big Picture mode. Can't verify right now, maybe someone else could take a look & report back?
