Existing Saves & You
A word from IronLisa
We have seen a lot of questions regarding whether or not you'll have to create a new world to get the Hearth & Home-content, and the answer is that it depends. For the vast majority of the content you won't have to create a new server, but some content won't be available if you have explored the whole map. So if you have a lot of unexplored areas there shouldn't be any issues, but if you have explored everything you could miss out on a few things. We are looking into solutions for this, and with some luck it won't be an issue at all, but for that we can't make any promises. More information on this will come when the update is released!

I would guess, that it has a certain distance into the Fog of War area, what already got generated. So, the further into the unexplored area should be more likely to contain new assets.

This game is still in "Early Access" = it is in 'active development'.
While it is understandable that dedicated players want to save their 1000s of hours they already put into the game, I feel there is no (technical) obligation to 'stick' to the old saves ...
... ever.
Games in active development are subject to MAJOR changes in all aspects? Design. Mechanics. Heck, even low-level code? If there is a better, more efficient way to package game data - go for it!
If the changes are significant, there can be no player expectation to hang on to 'old saves'?
This might pain your most dedicated players today, but you - the devs - have to think what is long-term best for THE GAME. :)

So, I certainly have a bunch of islands mostly unexplored, but I have sailed around most of them. Will that have "loaded them in" or something? I worry that whatever new features that are being teased in this post wont spawn because I've sailed near almost all of my islands.

Yeah. Too true. I'm scrambling to get the 5th boss' MacGuffin before the patch goes live. And I plan on nuking all of my saves when it comes up. Partly because I don't want to have to go to other islands to get the new ingredients and partly because I made some rookie mistakes that I can't undo otherwise.

Exactly. The only reason to remotely believe new terrain would have to be generated is the earlier implication that there may be smaller streams and running water. Your legitimate confusion is why this thread exists in the first place. Similarly equivocally, I think the next update after this one sequentially, if they're still roughly going by the roadmap, was supposed to be a mountain update (given that it's called "Cult of the Wolf"), so I wouldn't expect a new biome then either, but I could be wrong.
Agree but Kandarihu has a point here. Darkwood? Like literally we have new piece of wood - no clay shingles. We should take all options to consideration. They were 5 people - 5 updates. Some assets are already in game, i dont expect much but i wouldnt be suprised if Mistlands shows very soon after H&H or together.

I only expect what the devs actually promised, and no more. To expect stuff that they never talked about just means setting one's self up for disappointment. If they do give some surprises, that's just plain awesome. If they actually talk about stuff that justifies a fresh save in the next few weekly videos before release, that's good too. But if all we get is more clarification on what they're adding, we should be content with that. They've been spending these past few months working on Hearth & Home and not working on MIstlands. But they're going to work on the next Biome once H&H is all settled and devoid of serious bugs.Wait. There's new stuff to be explored? I thought the only changes are going to be different mechanics and more stuff to make. Will the new foods require new ingredients?
Wow, really? Is that really so hard to imagine? We could actually be gettin even new monsters, or even 1/2 new biome to facilitate H&H. Im not saying you are one of those complainers (about content) but its almost hillarious how ignorant those people are.

It's decided then, I'm not returning to the game until it's content-complete. I'm not going through that drudgery every 7 months.

There is always a wiki. Someone will find out, someone will write about it, someone will read it... and show will go on ;)
