Once you reach the desired number of critters, just stop feeding them. When you cull them, feed the remaining and build your population again. There is a limit per area. I usually pen off an area that's about 3x5 squares and I tend to end up with about a max of 10 boars, no matter how much I feed them after that point. Wolves are far more prolific and will fill a small area very quickly with many more.

If I count squares for example, let's say 4 walls by 7 walls, so 28 squares, is there a breeding limit per square perhaps?

In addition to the info on the wiki, you can circumvent the restriction by building a breeding pair pen high up enough to let it breed almost endlessly as long as they have food. Check youtube as there are a couple of different build designs.

And if you do what retsam1 indicated be aware that too many critters will tank your fps. My rig choked down to 15 fps when I had about 200 boars lol. Since then I've capped the quantity a bit
