wood shield. Pick a troll which is not holding a tree trunk, parry and smack him. Buckler, you parry and smack any troll senseless until he stares at you like Hawkins. use any weapon. even your axe will do. Spear might be faster to kill him, whatever.

Wood shield cant parry a troll , his damage whitout a log is 50 , and wood shield parry for 28 ( 41 if you have block skill at 100 but thats not possible in that part of the game )
With a bronze buckler lvl 3 its another story of course

why in the world would you fight a troll with a stagbreaker, it’s literally the worst weapon to use in that scenario

By the end of the forest you should be able to go toe to toe in a troll cave without a lot of worry. That implies fully upgraded armor esp your shield and a fully upgraded weapon. It will do trivial damage when you block and then you can combo it 3-4 hits then block again. Stop to stamina up every third block -- your food should be pretty solid too, of course. Unblocked and weak or near unarmored hits will splat you fast, though.

These misadventures are a good laugh if your head is in the right place. Better than rage quitting etc over it :)

How many arrows you used ? 10 ? Trolls are weak against pierce damage , fire arrows works but flint works way better , or a flint spear
Staggbreaker is the worst option because its slow and do more blunt damage than pierce , and trolls are very resistant vs blunt ( 75% resist )

I've said it once, i'll say it again: Learn to roll.

Roll into a troll's attack then strike twice. Watch your stamina, make sure you stay on higher ground or even footing, then simply repeat. The rolling animation gives you so much invincibility frames.
