Has this ever happened to you?
I was breaking up stones and noticed something wrong with my cape. Has this ever happened to you? Does it have anything to do with using the pickaxe, or just completely random?

As soon as I put the pickaxe away, the cape returned to normal.

Yes it happens a lot... it does happen a bit less since the fix though.
I just call it apron mode. Would be funny if it did this when on the forge and cook pot.

LOL
It sort of makes sense to me in this situation though--to keep the cape from getting hung up on the pickaxe when I'm swinging it rapidly at rocks.
Is it just something with the pickaxe, or does it randomly happen in other situations as well?

Often happens to me with the Troll cape,

Usually happens to me while crafting stuff at base, as I switch rapidly between chests or something, not sure exactly.
Edit: spelling

I bet it has something to do with rapidly switching between weapons, eating and using the pickaxe. I have only seen it this one time in a few hundred hours of gameplay. Does it happen to you often?

I'm just about hitting 250 hours in game now.
At a guess, I have seen it happen half a dozen times.
At a further estimate, I would put it happening 4 times in my base, and twice in the wild.
Edit: I am running the Native Linux version, with Vulkan shaders, for some specificity.

I've had it happen very rarely with other capes. It always happened following a stutter, though I can't remember if those stutters were save related or one of the less predictable varieties.
To me this seems like an indication that it's a bug related to the way that the collision detection of cloth physics are connected to frame rates. The cape simply intersects in a way that shouldn't happen under stable conditions, and is still fairly unlikely when unstable.
