When on the plains (like in the swamp) I tend to carefully recon out my approach. When I see lox (remember now they spawn on ground one has just passed over) I slowly approach and throw down 2 - 3 stacks of 3 cloudberries to tame. This allows me to see any fulings & deathsquitos in the vicinity, even if I end up not taming the lox. Always use the unequip/equip weapons button around lox, as they will chase forever if you have weapons equipped, with no weapons equipped they give up the chase rather quickly. A quick sprint then crouch with no weapons equipped usually loses their agro very quickly.

Throw them into the sea as a sacrifice to odin? That or a bunch of nails

Iron is the one metall you always need for building. The Ironwood bars (forgot its name ingame) works wonders for building higher and keeping the structural integrity before it breaks down.

you should always have enough iron to build a backup longship. 10 iron per longship.

Longship, Mace, Iron Buckler, iron axe.

I don't bother with the Banded Shield now that they have the buckler.

I’d say upgrading armor and bigger ship.
You’ll also need iron later in game (f.e. padded armor)

iron pick and then go get ya some silver

Iron round shield, iron mace, iron pick, get all to max level. Get all iron needed for iron sledge to level 4. Look it up. You will need or at least want the sledge for Mistlands.

Ship and pickaxe
Ship: faster and more slots
Pickaxe: more damage and more durability

Now go and get more iron

My priority is:

• Longship. As you said, more hauling is good.
  
• Shield is a major factor in survivability. Your bronze one will work... until it doesn't; until you run into a mob with a star or two that breaks your guard with every strike.
  
• An Iron Pickaxe will help mine faster. Faster mining means faster upgrades.
  
• An iron weapon to quickly bring down threats.
  
• Iron armor. Helps keep your insides inside when you can't block.
  
• Then probably bow, then other tools and upgrades around the base.

Ironwood beams. Do you have any idea what you can build with 101 ironwood beams!!!

Also, I find not getting close to mobs and shooting them all with arrows to be my preferred method of dealing with bosses. Sure, might take 300-400 of them, but it works up that bow skill and minimizes risk of harm.

I now have 21 pieces of iron left. This is what I build when thinking about your suggestions
New ship, check
lvl 2 mace, check
Max lvl banded shield, check

And oh boy these tools have come in handy!
Had to go out of my way to look for another swamp, and finally after a day of sailing found one. Saw the distinct trees and quickly made land to meadows that I was passing by. There is some trouble tho; between the meadows where I now have temporary landing base and the swamp lays small sliver of plains, and it's misty day.

One failed parry turned into block took away 60hp in one sting but I'm now proud owner of 3 needles

Will teleport back to home and lick my wounds over the night before trying again. Hopefully it will be clear skies tomorrow
