Do monsters despawn?

So I have a few fulings attacking my longship out in the ocean, and I teleported away at a nearby base.

I'm not powerful enough to fight these guys yet and they've nearly destroyed my boat. Will they eventually despawn if I stay away from that corner of the map for a spell?

No they don't unless they are night spawns. I've had a lox that chased my boat out into the middle of the ocean and hours later I sailed past that are again and the damn thing was still out there swimming where I finally got away from it.

I was afraid you'd say that.

I remember starting the game and some troll wandered out into a cottage in the Meadows and he was there every single time I went back....

I don't think they despawn. They will just be frozen/not loaded until you get back, where they will continue where they left off when you, or someone else, returns and loads the area.

I hope you didn't have anything important in that boat, but I think cargo floats. Nails sink though. Once the boat is toast they will either go back where they came from if it wasn't too far away, or get distracted and attack something else. If they got led too far from their spawn area they might stick around.

I had some bait and a fishing pole in there but the more important thing is the nails, which will sink. The boat's toast.
