Please someone tell me I've missed something about the atgeir.
I've been using the atgeir for a couple weeks now, and our group just got to the snow biome, and it looks like, after trying to fight a couple of wolves, that it has become completely unviable. I'm SUPER disappointed. I'm the polearms guy in our group. I've used the atgeir since it became available. It's fun, and I like being the polearms guy. But a wolf breaks right through my block every time. PLEASE tell me I'm missing something.

Are you using the special attack? On an Xbox controller that would be the right button. You have to use it before they jump at you.

Wolves hit hard. Blocking may not be the way to deal with them unless you got a shield with enough block strength.
A parry is highly recommended. The parry can block more damage then actual blocks, and will stun the enemy, leaving them open for a critical 2x attack with the atgeir.
Make sure it's upgraded so you can actually parry through their damage though, or it might still kill you.
Parrying wolves is easy, just block as soon as they're reaching you, they instantly attack.

Special attack stuns them and then the regular attack (Right trigger) takes their life down. Same way as the trolls.

wolfves can break through iron round shileds. if your using a 2 handed weapons my advice is to hit the wolf before it hits you. you should be able to stunlock it

Idk what you mean by blocking. Atgier is a two handed weapon. I guess you could block with it, but why?

If you are with a team, then they block and parry and you use special attack. They should be masters at parrying by time you get to snow. Just standing and blocking from the mountains forward is a death sentence. Don't do it. Learn the parry at grey dwarf spawns or skeles, especially 2stars. And trolls, abominations all are great for learning to parry in combat situation when you might feel stressed and start to button mash. Timing is everything.

Sorry, really I meant parrying AND blocking. I'm pretty sure it did quite a bit of damage through the parry. Idk what you mean by blocking. Atgier is a two handed weapon. I guess you could block with it, but why?

No block. Only spin.
This is my first run using the atgeir seriously and it works great on the wolves. The spin attack sometimes hits when a straight on attack misses because of the inclines. With atgeir the best defense is a good offense. Stagger them before they stagger you. I was running around up there in troll armor and iron helmet with the iron atgeir and doing fine (except when jumping around like a mountain goat without resting in between and losing all my stamina.)

You need enough stamina to block with any weapon. And stronger attacks take more stamina to block. Do not try blocking if you are less than half of your stamina bar or you'll get obliterated by wolves

people go nuts over it, but i find it very lacking. it's regular attack has an extremely small hitbox meaning you will miss things directly infront of you. It's not good vs most of the things that cause you trouble, and it also can't chop trees despite being an axe. I'll take crystal axe over black metal atgeir any day.
And yeah regular blocking is garbage in this game. even with max level armor, food and shield a 2* mob will still oneshot you if you try blocking. Parry or dodge, those are your options.

Just use the special attack instead of going for blocks, that'll smack them right as they get into range and stun them just as if you parried them, then you just stab them with the basic attack. You basically never need to parry with it, though it's capable enough at doing so if you're using a high enough level and material one for the area you're in. So you should have an iron atgeir if you're fighting wolves, which has no problem with them, though I'm pretty sure even bronze works for using special attack to stun them.

What food were you using? I seem to recall it having an effect on blocking/parrying.

My recommendation is that you don't even try to block/parry. As they close in ... just before they reach you ... use the secondary attack (timed basically so they run right into it). You'll do a 360 and knock-back/stagger them.
Now step forward and do a three-hit combo - you get the stagger bonus and you can take down pretty much anything by the third hit.
Spoiler:
Didn't work "great" against the Fulings, but it did work. In the Mistlands however, you get a new polearm that shoots lighting. It knocks-back and stuns seekers briefly. Again, step forward and do the three-hit combo and they are toast (even one-stars). Also VERY effective agains seeker brood. And talk about a game-changer ... ticks just pop like balloons when you do the secondary 360. Super easy way to get ticks off your back.
Only one caveat ... when you step forward to skewer them, be aware that the angle of attack (hitbox) is very narrow as others mentioned. I think the wiki says 30-degrees so you need to line up pretty well.

They have decent reach, and the secondary attack works well. It's a good weapon in co-op, but not any more amazing than any other weapon you've become highly skilled with or can use a lot of stamina on. Also, no shield. When you get the mistlands atgeir, that's when it begins to come into its own right thanks to elemental damage type which you can abuse in rain and other wet conditions, not unlike the somewhat weaker but more defensive Frostner.

Atgeir is my favorite weapon. I was using maces for a long while when I started playing the game, but I got tired of the knockback always knocking things back out of range for combos or finishing them while stuned. I tried sword/shield and atgeir on plains to figure out what I preferred and Atgeir all the way. The pierce damage is super nice and if you time your parries with it you can smash anything pretty easily. If you do ever get swarmed or overwhelmed you have your secondary attack to give you some space. As others have mentioned it makes ticks super easy. The stun function when you hit mistlands tier makes the best weapon even better.
