Find the shop and buy some stuff.

Somewhere in the black forest biome is a shopkeeper. You can usually spot him under a slightly glowing blue magical dome.

Look for a loot bag icon to appear on the map when you get near the merchant's location... but tbh even after you find him and get your headlamp, strongman belt and fishing pole there isn't a lot to spend coin on other than fishing bait.

Depending on your world seed, the merchant might be very far away from the map center. I got frustrated holding onto all the 'treasure' you find, so I looked up another world seed with a more convenient merchant.

AFTER you find the trader and buy everything you can possibly use, you will still have 15 boxes of gold coins, minus two or three stacks. I'm hoarding mine like a dragon though, Home and Hearth might - maybe - have things to purchase. And we know the Trader will be expanded at the same time.

I wish we could put gold in the smelter to make ingots, which could be crafted into equipment, decorations, etc.

the shop does not begin to chew through the amount you get even if you do not seek any out. I just dump mine in a chest hoping later it will have more stuff to buy.

There's a server that is recruiting that uses a gold-based economy. Maybe check them out?
