How about actually building the island itself.. in the mouth of a river.. then a bridge where ships can sail under. Then secret passages from the pontoons up to bridge. Then villages on either bank.

It's awesome because it's easy to defend and you can build whatever you want...love my island!

there is utility stuff... bedroom(comfort), kitchen (food). workshops (all crafting), farm (outside), storage, docks/fishing area/trap, portal hub, and after that its all for fun if you enjoy it. If not, stop once you have an efficient setup. I can put everything I need in a 2 room shack that takes like 30 min to build.

I built an entire city along with bars, inns, farm houses, apiaries, etc.

Your limit is your imagination.
