Oceans & Sailing

An update to the game's ocean biome is presumably a good deal further down on the development schedule. That hasn't kept a lot of players from thinking about it though, so here is your chance to dream big.

Add all of your seaworthy suggestions here:
  • Ship designs
  • Enemies from the shallows and the deep
  • Boss design & Forsaken power
  • Weapons & armour
  • Biome-specific buffs / debuffs
  • Resources for food & crafting
  • Wildlife
  • Activities
  • ....and whatever else you can come up with

As usual, there are no guarantees that even popular suggestions make it into the game, but you never know what might catch IGS's collective eyes.

This is a Megathread. Threads with similar topics will get merged with it.

Ghost Ships
I don't know why I'm asking for this since the ocean scares me enough, but how about ghost ships that only come out in a heavy mist. You bet that would keep people on edge.

Yes, I like this. Ghost long ships full of vikings that shoot arrows at you and want to board your ship and kill you! Great stuff sir!

Leviathan and building
Despite obvious, this suggestion emerge from what happened yesterday to me.

my story
(you can jump forward, to read the suggestion down below)
In short: I was sailing when sighted a leviathan, decided to board it to mine abyssal barnacles, but there was storming the giant sea waves made my small karve to capsize. I had right the time to jump on the big creature, and my boat capsized, broke and sunk.

At that point, even being in the middle of the ocean, I thought my hopes was not lost: as usual, I have portal's elements in my inventory, and I recovered at least 10 wood logs from the broken ship, so I started by crafting a workbench... oh... wait... "invalid placement"... argh... I moved all around the giant beast, which was like a stone hill, trying to find a viable place to setup my workbench, so to craft a portal and jump back home (then, hopefully, I could have took a second karve to recover the few boxes left by the old one's sunk, or just continue my exploration sailing).

No way: no viable zone where to place a workbench. At that time I felt I was going to die, sooner or later, when the leviathan restarted sailing, so I looked up to the sky, accepting my fate and, trying to earn the best from the bad situation, I mined all the barnacles, making the big beast to submerge.
Even that didn't kill me: what killed me was the Sea serpent, called by my loud noises, when I was using my pickaxe. It chewed me to death (had no way even to use my bow, as I was in the water... if it was worthing to use it).

the suggestion
Quite simple (what I'm asking, not sure it's simple to implement): to allow building over a Leviathan, so that, if one remains, like me, casted away on it, but having a way to go survive (a portal, materials to build a raft, whatever) he can at least use them.

Leviathans, despite being a creature, seems mostly like an "object": you can mine part of it, you can walk on it... so why you can't even place a workbench?

Side note: whichever better suggestion, to exit by the told situation, are welcome.

So you want to build on a living creature?

If I was a large creature and someone tried building on me I was take you down quickly to the abyssal plains under the ocean.

Here is your solution that you did not think of, which I guess maybe an exploit but regardless let me teach you how to live here.

So, boat gone, on a Levithan you think you are going to drown. First, jump off, start swimming to the nearest landmass. As soon as you start losing your health from lack of stamina, log out, go into another world. Rest, get full stamina up, go back in the world you are having a problem in and swim some more. Now you repeat this cycle until you are on land. My friends have done this, I have another friend who is afraid of boating so he swam to all other islands using this method.

Good luck.

the easiest fix for this would be to just allow placing boats within the vicinity of a leviathan

I can see boulders and trees, so why not being able to place a workbench too?
I'm not asking to build a longhouse: just place a workbench (which is mandatory, to be able to deploy anything else than a campfire), maybe a portal, or a raft, and go away... maybe while the leviathan submerges, I'm not against it.

So, I should use a cheat, what else?
I'm not impressed you're suggesting that, instead of a normal way (which currently don't exist).
I'm trying to suggest IGS to solve the problem in a "normal way": your way didn't come to my mind exactly 'cause it's a cheat. I think games should work "normally", if possible.

P.S. 1
your so-called "solution" is the same one can use to teleport ore: I know it, I figured it at the exact time a wondered how it was possible to teleport ore, but I never used it anyway.

P.S. 2
on our world, your suggestion can't work, also: ServerSide-characters prevents it.

My boat have been destroyed exactly 'cause I moved it too near to the leviathan, with the storm going on: it gone over the giant monster's back, then fell back in the sea... upside down (a mechanic I like and I don't want to be changed: it was me to fail, thinking I was able to board the beast even with the storm, so I paid seeing my boat to sink, that must remain).

The only solution I can think about is the one I wrote in the 1st post: to be able to place a workbench, and to build over the leviathan's back (if to place a portal) or to use the workbench to deploy a raft (if one have such materials at hand).

P.S.
there is a way to reach a landmass even having materials for a cart: it's mid way between cheating and "mechanics abusing" but it works. It only needs a workbench to be present, for cart deployment.

I’ve never seen a boat capsize due to waves. Are you sure you didn’t ram it into the leviathan? I’m pretty sure they’ll never allow building on a leviathan since it’s an entity and moves, so that’s not the solution to your problem.

4th ship (trailer ship) and ships and the sea update
I love sailing in this game (I wish we had closer to sea of thieves but that's too much for this game I guess). I got so hyped when I found out there's a "trailer ship" ship type in game files. Its name comes obviously from the fact they used it a couple of times in a trailer. It does float if you spawn it but you can't sail on it which is sad because it looks cool.

The devs pushed the update to sometime after mistlands update...

Regarding sailing I kinda dislike no wind situations especially when they last for a long time. It's not the most fun to experience. Also perhaps make serpent trophy float (it sinks).

What would you guys love to see in the update? More ships and stuff? Maybe new mechanics or something?

When is there no wind? I've never seen this situation. It's just not always blowing the direction you would like.

As I wrote, I got too near to the leviathan: waves was nearly covering it so, in the storm, I didn't see my boat overlapped his shell: when waves went down, the karve hit the leviathan and, being a short light boat, falling down to the sea capsized: if I had a drakkar it probably just landed back in the sea, a karve can capsize, instead.

All apart, technically I don't want to "build on a leviathan": being able to place down a workbench, even if it breaks after minutes, is far more than enough, to me.
If I build anything over the beast and it moves, making my castle (LOL) to crumble in the sea, seems correct to me.

I've seen plenty of times where the wind was so weak, you made better time rowing. Just like the real world.

I love the boats too. But I think serpent trophies should stay hard to get.
As for what I want? Fuling pirates!

I haven't seen this fourth ship but I'd absolutely love to see a wider variety of them. A larger vessel would be awesome, preferably with a small section dedicated to resting or sleep. A cooking station, even. I love to sail too, and agree about the serpent trophy. I think it makes sense for the scales to sink, though.

There are means in the game that can be used to alleviate those two issues: The power from Forsaken and the harpoon.

Hey there,

here is your usual friendly reminder: Please stop fighting with each other. If you can't be constructive with each other, please try and stay out of each other's posts. The forums are not the place to carry out personal fights about differing opinions.

Have a good day!

Yeah you are right on that for sure.
