I have no idea why people complain about fishing in this game, its the best I've played as an actual fisherman.
I really enjoy fishing, and don't get to do it often due to a lot of circumstance.
As such I always look into fishing mechanics in games that have it and Valheim nails it better than any I've played outside of a dedicated fishing game.
First there need to actually be fish there.
Second you can often see them strike to anticipate when to set the hook.
You can over fish areas.
Fish will actually approach your lure on their own.
Fishing has actual value in the game and isn't some weird achievement or item hunt.
Some things I'd love to see added on is more fish types, trophy fish you could mount, biomes having different fish which could lead to different food types. Also tuna shouldn't be caught in the same place as pike, and fresh and salt water should be things but still the fishing in this game is quite good.
Craftable rods would also be great, the merchant mechanic feels like a placeholder.
For anyone having a problem in fishing, right click to set the hook and don't let go of it for long, stamina foods are your friend, and don't be afraid to move around, just like in real fishing. If you don't see any fish, their won't be, its more like pond/small lake fishing in that respect.

I haven't really seen that many people complain about fishing, but I'd guess most people don't really enjoy doing things that they have to go out of their way to do, especially if the 'reward' isn't worth it. What are the stats on cooked fish again? 35 health 15 stamina? It's something along those lines (pun not intended) which is beaten by pretty much all food found in the black forest (the area you'd need to reach in order to even begin fishing).
Obviously the game is in early access and they've mentioned a fishing update is coming, but right now fishing just isn't worth the time in my opinion.

Tbh for me personally it fails on the two important parts:
1) It's not immersive because physics break everything
2) it's boring
I also disagree with that it's hard or annoying, you literally just need some stamina.
I guess the main source of contempt is, for a completely optional activity it's just not interesting or polished enough so there's little incentive to do it, unless you really want that fish food for whatever reason.

I'm one of those who finds the fishing really relaxing and rewarding. My only wish for fishing is that you should be able to use the spear to catch em too. Would make them a much more viable early-game food if you don't get lucky enough to find the trader right away.

What i'd like to know is why they haven't added the ability to level up fishing, each level could add a small bonus Eg: less stamina cost, faster reel speed or even a chance to get extra meat.

I don't mind it too much, but I do get it, it is worse when you host a game and have like 8 people running around and a storm hits and the fish are like no where near the water, and walk up to them and grab them lol

Fishing in the game is fine by me. It's not something you need to do but if you feel like doing something casual while taking a break from exploring/fighting, it's there for you to do. Cooked fish has the same stats as cooked wolf meat and has been pointed out, you can make fishwraps once you've unlocked the Windmill. According to the teasers from the Dev Team, it looks like you'll be able to mount fish when the Mistlands update drops and there will be more variety. It's just nice to have the option if you want to do it. I'm sure quite a few of you have come across the random fish or two that washed up in a tidal pool that you could grab without a fishing rod. Fun surprise.

Yep. It works real well for that. =0DI know the reason people complain about the fishing.
... bla bla bla...
Birches gonna birch (except the 'r' should be a 't')
Nice way to dismiss literally all complaints and criticism on anything by anyone. Well except for what you subjectively deem 'real' or 'valid'.
So because you feel it's a great game any and all complaints are just whining? Ok.
Personally, I don't care for fishing. It was fun for a while but I got bored with it so I rarely do any now. Never thought to complain about it. If you enjoy it, knock yourself out. Teach is own.

I've always raised an eyebrow at those who say it's hard or annoying in this game. It's really neither if you know how to do it effectively. But each to their own. Sometimes people just don't like to fish.

I dunno, fished a lot in this game and I finally came to the realization that I catch way more fish if I snag them. They wander by bait, Snag them, they get near bait, Snag them. But on my current seed the fish must have gotten the message. There are almost no fish to be found, not in rivers, not by big rocks in open water, not near necks. All the places where fish should be there might be one crummy little one. So yup, gonna complain.
If you like fishing, New World which otherwise is a terrible game, their fishing is amazing. Whoever the dev is, should get an award. Rest of the game is trash but hey, nothing is perfect.

I know the reason people complain about the fishing.
A significant portion of the human population just can't be happy unless they are complaining about something. They will always find something to complain about. Always. God could come down and unlock the Garden of Eden and these people would complain that the weather is too nice all the time and that there is too much food to eat.
I used to work in a family run cabinet shop where it seems that I could never do anything to my bosses satisfaction. At the end of every day I expected to be told not to come back the next day but instead they would be all friendly and chummy. About this time I noticed that if I didn't mess anything up they would get really weird because they still had to complain even when there wasn't anything to complain about. So I would do some small thing wrong in the morning and they would complain about it all day and everyone would be happy.
So you have a great game like Valheim that you can play for thousands of hours and still want to keep playing. These people will whine endlessly about the next update or why do the mobs bother me all the time or why does the fishing have to be so hard (or easy, tedious or whatever they have thought up that they don't like).

I like fishing at night, especially on a dedicated server, because nobody sleeps. I'll find a nice spot and build a small dock and decorate it with a fishing theme.

As a fisherman, how often did you see fish hover over the water, swimming in the air?
Just curious, because as a non-fisherman that's not something I've seen that often, but it might be my lack of experience.
In all seriousness though, if they want fishing to be taken seriously apart from what you mentioned about different loot from different fish, they really need to fix those physics.

Well flying fish aside, this isn't a fishing gripe, its a game engine gripe, and since the fish are actual objects in the game they will be subject to the same quirks. I've seen it as often as grass growing under giant rocks, and animal heads poking through doors. I'll take magic fish at times over the usual fishing mechanics in game which is cast... wait... every tick has a random X% chance of there being a fish. This is what makes fishing in games like ESO awful.
In all seriousness though, if they want fishing to be taken seriously apart from what you mentioned about different loot from different fish, they really need to fix those physics.
Honestly feels like a very minor issue to me in that respect. It would be a really nice fix but not a priority.

45 health which is good early game and 70 health for fish wraps which are one of the better foods late game as its almost as good as lox pie or serpent stew but easier to get by a good margin and for that matter stacks with them for massive hitpoints ok stam if you like that style. Its not the best but I was able to easily make 20 fish wraps last night just hitting a few fishing spots.
Its like farming in game, You don't HAVE to take the time, you could play this to the end point right now never crafting a cultivator or buying a fishing rod. You'll miss out on a few good options though doing it. We (I play with 2 others) found the merchant pretty early in our game and +45 health was pretty damn good for the Black Forest. Its one of the better ones until you start to get sausages, wolf jerky and the like. Then it takes a back seat until fish wraps.
