Never had anything i have dropped on the ground disappear no matter how far away from a structure. Running on a private server with no mods.

Same. A lot of people talk about things disappearing when they're not around a workbench, but I sometimes run into random loot I didn't pick up even days/weeks later.

Things definitely do despawn. I suppose if you leave the area quickly so that the area goes inactive, and come back later it might still be there, but I was working a crypt the other day, went back to my base to work the first load of iron ore, and all the items in the water, including iron ore, had despawned. The base was a reasonable distance away (well out of render distance), and I was there for 2-3 days.

If you don't plant the seeds using the cultivator, but just drop them on the ground, then they will disappear just like any other dropped object, unless they are close to a player structure such as a workbench etc. Seeds stored in chests or carried in your inventory does not disappear.
