Can iron be smelted or not?
I've read a few guides online and some threads here but I'm still confused about iron. Can it be smelted from scrap? I have scrap but cannot put it in the smelter. From what I've seen, iron can only be gotten from sunken crypts. Thanks for comments.

if you get attacked by fuling then thats how
fullings will 1 shot you if you arent full iron armor and many times will kill you fast even in it
I had a piece of Black Metal before Scrap Iron. There was a tiny piece of plains next to where I was setting up my first Swamp outpost and a group of Fulings spawned at night there. I took a chance and was able to snipe one from my little tree fort with a bow, then stayed hidden until the sun came up and the rest of its group despawned, then I came down and collected the loot from the one kill.

Black Metal is smelted by a different furnace than Iron, copper and tin.
Wish they would make it so the Blast furnace smelted the 'lesser' metals .

How are you getting Black Metal before Iron? The metal I tried putting in was probably the fuling crap. Need to get the regular stuff in the crypts. Thanks for the info.

Sunken Crypts in the swamp. Use the pick on the big muck piles in the doorways. That smelts to iron ingots.

Black Metal you get from Fulings is not Scrap Iron. Black Metal needs the blast furnace, Scrap Iron needs the smelter.

Black Metal Scrap (Dark Green/Black colour) from Fulings (and Fuling Village Chests) needs the Blast Furnace.
Scrap Iron (Brown colour) from the Sunken Crypts (and sometimes Swamp Creatures drops) needs the Smelter.
Iron Ore (Light Brown colour -- material like Copper/Tin Ore) is something I have only seen spawned from the -console/Devcommands. So if you ran across that somewhere on the Map and Pick-axed it, I have no idea how that gets processed. Mistlands, Ashlands and the Frozen North are not completed Biomes yet and it may come from there.

Yes, you get iron from smelting scrap. When using the smelter, coal goes to the right and scrap to the left.

is what you have called BLACK iron? That needs a NEW type of smelter and is a DIFFERENT metal.
The normal iron from crypts is "iron".
