A preset seed and going out to explore said seed aren't mutually exclusive.

You're simply equating preset= player knowing everything on the map ahead of time. That's not always the case.

also there are threads with great maps people found you can lift a seed, just watch the age as the algorithm has changed a couple of times since launch and really old ones may not be the same as they were (?). So while there are no prefab pick worlds you can get some with specific nice things like a handy vendor or enough iron to get going.

Because exploration is long. If you want to build a base on a small island, sometimes it's a good idea to check if such island actually exists somewhere on the map. Or you might spend a few days in a boat for nothing.

It's a tricky one, the maps *are* procedural but at present they're restricted to a very small and now fully mapped possibility space, I assume to avoid unpredictable worldgen edge cases during development. They may expand on this after all biomes and game mechanics are locked down.

And if they don't, as I say worldgen can be modifed by the community. If the terrain starts getting boring people will absolutely add their ideas to the stew.

So you're telling me the maps aren't really procedurally-generated? If they've actually already been created, and we're just randomly given one of them, I may be out for this game.

All procedural generated worlds follow a similar technique. Underlying you want to create noise maps and there are different ways to do this, end result is the same anyway. Seeds are used to "reset" the random number generator. When starting an RNG instance with a seed, it will always give the same "random" values in order. Then positions (and many other calculations) in the noise map is calculated from some RNG created offsets. This is why it is possible for everything to look random, but still the same for everyone using the same seed.

There is a map on Reddit that shows the whole possible world of Valheim. The game world is a partial part of that world. Then all the biomes, spawns, etc are calculated out from the partial section.

If this really bothers you and you are "out from this game", then you need to stop/avoid playing games like No Man's Sky, Minecraft, and many others.

That's actually how Minecraft works as well

There is a hard number of seeds that isn't technically infinite.

It would take millions of years to play them all though.

Not sure how many valheim has, but each seed has a corresponding code and there is a website where you can preview any of the current seeds

The worlds ARE procedurally generated, but the seed base is only so big

The worldgen isn't that flexible right now, it's effectively stamping out the coastlines and mountains from a relatively small mathematical area then randomising the other biomes across the flat bits. Small enough that any two random world seeds will likely have some identical island formations.

That can be modded though. Here's Tolkien's Middle Earth: https://www.nexusmods.com/valheim/mods/616

You can use the Valheim World Generator website to preview random seeds and pick one you like.

You can hide any information beforehand to avoid boss locations etc
