What are your personal "rules" for the game?
If it's 100% vanilla, that's fine, but that's not what I'm asking. Naturally, I recommend going that way for a first run.
I've been playing modded solo permadeath lately. My last and furthest run ended in the mountains to some wolves, hadn't killed Bonemass yet, did have upgraded iron, but this idiot didn't have a big enough turnip stock yet and was carrying forest food into the mountains. Die and learn. I do mod some things to make it go faster, otherwise the repetition would really get to me, but nothing that pertains to combat. I've been finding my own balance of what is fun and what isn't. Since I'm getting to the point where getting to the mountains seems possible I may modify my rules to allow me one death per unique boss killed, since the mountains has a lot of new stuff I haven't seen before that I want to try.
So my rules for this run are semi-permadeath, earning one revive per boss (killing the same one more than once doesn't count.) New character and new world. I do allow metal through portals and raised the drop rate of rng ores a little bit. It still takes effort but it's not as mind-numbing. Auto smelter and kilns are an awesome luxury. (Those surtling hearts I rescued from the crypts are grateful and work for me now! Bwahahaha!) And I do look at the map once I have scouted the Elder's location in person. (I don't find wandering around lost for many real life hours to be fun.) So, yes the game is sped up some, but it should be since I find myself back at square one repeatedly.
What are your self-imposed rules to liven up replays? And don't tell me I'm not having fun, because I am.

Yep, I've done that.
I think my biggest cause of death is overconfidence around skeletons, because skeletons are easy, right? I'm learning a lot about what that armor rating means in early game.

Pretty relaxed. I have no mods, and prefer not to world hop most of the time. If I do a large build (which is only after beating all bosses), I do allow myself to take from another char on another world, rather than spend another 20 hours gathering iron for construction beams. Its still stuff I gathered, just not locally. Enough crypts is enough ;)
I have learned about myself that pure hardcore is not for me. The reason is simply that it becomes dull for me to never do anything risky/stupid.

No bows. Strong believer that they remove almost all of the challenge. Spears instead. Works great for 99% of the game, but Drakes can be frustrating because you need to aim up so high that if you miss you yeet your spear into the horizon. Luckily Fang Spears are really really silver cheap to make, so I just carry a few and don't sweat the lost ones. This playstyle has really made me appreciate the spear (new favorite). It's the only weapon other than the bow (and harpoon I guess) that you can aim up or down, and if you need an extra meter of range or something, throwing it short distances is basically just like a long thrust (makes up for spear melee range being shorter than it seems like it should be).
Few to no portals. Kinda the same thing as the bows, once you have an extensive portal network nothing seems risky or adventurous anymore. So I pretty much just use them when I'm exploring far away. I also drop a lot of beds so that I spawn near my death instead of spawning at home and then portaling. Definitely no ore through portals, IMO that turns metal gathering into a tedious chore with no risk and no reward. At least something interesting can happen on the way home if you have to sail or cart. Unpopular opinion, but the most fun session I've had to date, in over 500 hours, was an absolute catastrophe sailing home with my group after our first iron haul. That created hours of really fun times that never would've happened if we just portaled or world hopped.

I play with my own personally designed custom textures for armors and such, so... I like to wear the "appropriate clothing" for specific and special jobs, and make sure to remove it when i go to bed at night. Fashion!
