Just happened again to me with a 2nd drauger fang. Went to upgrade it on the Upgrade tab, realized I didn't have enough guck, left the menu and pivoted to the chest right there to grab some guck, went back to the forge and upgraded my drauger fang. Whoops, it's back on the creation menu!
This isn't fun at all, it's just a counter-intuitive and frustrating mini game. Sometimes it remains on the Upgrade menu, sometimes it doesn't. "Pay attention" isn't a solution. Please fix this. I love the game but this is seriously the dumbest part.

Yeah that could work too, but I think the real problem is that the game trains us incorrectly. Sometimes it remains on the Upgrade menu, sometimes it does not. It should just always remain on the menu that you left it on and none of this would be an issue. And all of the players that say "pay attention" wouldn't complain either because it would simply be a better user experience for everyone. I think a better solution might be to revamp the menu so that you choose the item first from a list of things you are able to construct, and then the UI takes you to the Craft menu if you don't have that item, or the Upgrade menu if you've already made one. Of course, then you'll get people who DO want to make a backup copy of the tool/weapon complaining. To mangle a quote: "You can satisfy some of the people all of the time, and all of the people some of the time, but you can't satisfy all of the people all of the time."

This game isn't hard so go to Black Forest and farm copper and tin
OR the player can just pay attention. The mechanic as is works fine. There is really no need to try to 'player proof' it.
Have I fallen victim to the 'created a 2nd when I wanted to upgrade instead' monster? Yes.
But it was my inattention, not some flaw in the game, that was the cause.
Now I pay attention and have no issues.
Good job not answering the question while looking like an ass.

One of the correct solutions to this extremely annoying problem is not to be able to deconstruct items, but to PERMANENTLY remain on the last menu that the user selected, whether it be CREATE or UPGRADE. The problem that keeps happening to me is this extremely counter-intuitive game mechanic that keeps deciding for me that I want to create something when in fact I just want to upgrade. For example, I just made a new iron pickaxe for 20 iron. Went to the upgrade menu and upgraded it once but then ran out of upgrade materials. Left the crafting table, opened a chest above it, grabbed the missing mats, went back to the table and upgraded the item. Whoops, the game moved me back to create tab! The biggest problem is that it doesn't always move you back in every scenario, so it's just a terrible UX. Just a useless griefing mechanic. Please fix this!!! I just wasted an hour hunting mud piles only to lose 20 additional iron in the blink of an eye because of a bad GUI UX choice.

I suspect your out of Luck as if it were possible it would be a work around to the "no metal thru Portals" rule. Simply make up a pick axe port that through and disassemble so not likely to happen in base game.

I have found that, in vanilla Valheim, there is no way to undo the crafting of a weapon, tool, or armor item. This simple fact has led to much rending of clothing and gnashing of teeth on my part.
I have come to the conclusion that in Valheim, as in real life, when one has made a boneheaded error one must live with it.

You cannot recycle or break down items such as that in the vanilla game, therefore cannot get your materials back.
The reason for this is (probably) to prevent players from exploiting such a feature to bypass the "metals through portals" restrictions.... I otherwords, to prevent players from crafting all their metals into items, in order to transport them through the portal, with the intention of breaking them back down after porting home (to get the metal back)... I wouldn't ever expect to see the ability to "recycle" tools, weapons or gear for that very reason.

It would also be too easy to recycle weapon A to make weapon B for a specific enemy, or just to try it out, and then back to weapon A.

I downloaded a mod called Discard or Recycle Inventory Items after making a second Draugr fang instead of upgrading my current one. It is too easy to hit craft while being in the wrong tab. It works.

If I were using mods that would be one I'd grab in a heartbeat. I've run into this multiple times, comes partially from playing when I'm not alert but I do wish there was an "opt-in" warning popup for when you attempt to create a duplicate of an upgrade-able item you already have. Until then its either grin and bear it or devcommands for me.

Nope, sorry. You could use devcommands, but yeah.... there is no official way to undo a mistake like that.
