Question about metal nodes:

Can someone explain to me the mechanics and conditions that are in play when a mining node (silver or copper) just "explodes".

I know you can dig around both and leave them completely suspended in air (they won't collapse on their own like stone monoliths and boulders).

I'm looking for definitive answers and not theories.

I had a screenshot of the floating node. I had it completely separated from all rock/ground. I'll do another for science.

My theory isn't that is has to be disconnected from all surrounding ground AND there can be absolutely no left over ground on the node itself.
This might explain why it won't explode right away but sometime while you are mining the node. You hit that little chunk of ground and then it explodes.

that sounds plausable i'm eager to test it out.

Question...does that still exist?
It was on a friends server so I honestly don't know. Not sure if he is still keeping it going. Kind of doubt it at this point.

I've found it's when you hit the lowest portion of the exposed ore vein. I think, the engine is considering that point, the foundation?? At least from my experience, it's the lowest portion exposed.

I believe it is just that a node's "hit box" is larger than its visual; let's say that it can extend up to 1 meter away. The whole deposit will explode depending on whether a "hit box" is still in contact with the ground or something, or If you dug enough around it.

I've done it recently with silver veins, if it doesn't all collapse as soon as you totally undermine it, hop on top and give it a hit with your pickaxe, and pray your GPU doesn't overload

It is just luck. Though I find if I hit the end of a silver node it has a 50/50 chance. Just be sure it’s not touching the ground anywhere.

Your second sentence basically answers this.

If you dig around them until they are suspended in air, then a single chunk breaking after that will explode the whole thing.

Dig around silver until it's floating, then mine a single chunk - boom.

I'm probably going to explain it poorly, but essentially when the node is suspended but hasn't "exploded", there's likely still some "invisible tethers" anchoring it to the ground. Since you can only dig down an x-amount of "blocks" (I think it's 10?), this anchor is probably below that threshold. You basically just have to do a process of elimination at that point, whittling away at the bottom of the node until you sever all those tethers.
I think it can also depend on the elevation that the node. I've had some coastal nodes that would never "explode" because most of those aforementioned anchors were much deeper than I could dig/level out.

Which would indicate there was a small piece of ground still attached to the node.
