So, is each update going to take this long?
I know how the old roadmap was thrown out for whatever reason, and that mistlands is almost done and is the current focus, but like, are each of biomes coming going to take a year and a half? I know that right now, a huge complaint people have with the game is that after a year and four months of development, with millions of sales has only gotten minimal content added, right? So is this how it's going to be for the next five or so years, or are things going to speed up?

i guess we get 1 update a year... last year we got H&H... we already got un update this year with Frozen Caves... i predict, and pretty sure the intention of the devs is that we get Mistlands sometimes in 2023 between March and September 2023... the pace is established already, that's how the devs work and need this amount of time to update the game...

The developer team for Valheim is pretty small like perhaps 6 or 7 people and I think they hired like 2 more developers awhile after Early Access release. Even if you throw a ton of money at a small indie team they can only do so much when it comes to developing the game.
While we've had the Hearth and Home update that was on the road map, ice caves, additions to the swamp biome and plains biome - I imagine releasing a whole new biome would take quite a lot more time to finalize before being let out to the public or in some sort of beta form.
New terrain systems, environment pieces, enemies which would mean modeling, animation, texturing, programming, balancing, etc... and then you'd have all the new items associate with a new biome when it comes to weapon progression, building materials, food materials, trophies and whatever else.
Part of the risk in supporting an early access game is that you are paying for an unfinished product without knowledge as to when or even if it will be fully completed. In a way it's a gamble that one should only make if they wish to support the game and it's developers - otherwise just wish list the game and wait for a full release and reviews to see if you want to purchase said game.

I don't understand how this game is "releasing" to consoles next spring when it is clearly years from being completed.

Personally, I'm in love with the game, as is, so I've certainly got a biased opinion by way of that. I DO find myself eagerly Googling "Valheim news" while I'm at work and just sort of "daydreaming" that there'll magically be MORE Valheim when I'm free and at home again, but it makes sense to me that this is an effort from a small team and that they're putting quality work into the product, rather than rushing content out the door. There are plenty of more expensive Triple-A games out there, a lot of which are inferior to Valheim and less polished as "finished" products, to say nothing of the many that push out levels, skins, and other paid content, effectively turning the games into hobbies as expensive as restoring classic cars. I hate that this current one is a generation of gamers who don't remember buying non-updatable, offline, cartridge-based games, then trying to make the most of the ones that were disappointing or altogether "broken" experiences. If you enjoy the game, there are plenty of ways to squeeze it for more. Done everything already? Grab a minimal armload of stuff, or a 450-lb pile, or even a maxed-out "carrying too much" sh*t-ton, and hop over to a new seed and explore. Build something in a vastly different architectural style than your old fortress. Put down your favorite weapon and work on maxing out another skill and mapping out a new seed. Build a silo full of troll hide and Yagluth things. Hell; start a new character, altogether, with the acquired knowledge of how to approach the early game from less tedious angles. If none of that appeals to you, do the "follow" thing, as Eightball suggested above, and come back later. We're all entitled to our own opinions, but there's nothing to be won by expressing disappointment in the devs' speed of work. It's a documented part of that toxic fandom syndrome, feeling entitled to more of the things we enjoy and getting hostile about it when we don't get them quickly or at all. This feels like a game (not to mention a development team) that deserves a better community than that, IMHO. Sorry; I'll step down from the soapbox, now, and get back to stockpiling Fuling heads and feeding my battalion of guard-Lox.

To the OP, your not crazy, originally promised 3 major content drops in first year. That got thrown out due to its popularity and so they spent a few months after release doing bug fixes and stability fixes. No idea what they've been doing since. Either they have increased their scope in what new content they plan on bringing due to being flushed w/ cash now, or slowed down b/c well we're flushed with cash. Fact its coming to gamepass and xbox with no showing of new content makes me think the latter. Why people continue to defend these devs well its early access so blah blah blah. I'm well aware it was an early access title but you buy in and support said titles because of the promise of delivery and final finished product based on the devs own words. Any other ea title that failed to deliver like these have would be review bombed, people would get the word out not to support them. I'm still hopeful the devs will deliver, but I'm losing faith and quickly that this game will ever be feature complete and released.

Games in EA can vary dramatically in their development time. Subnautica took several years and turned out to be a great game, but during EA the same things were posted by early adopters; why does it take so long, is this game dead, we should get more content than we are, etc.
So for some people a good approach is to delete the game from their library, put it on 'follow' and just wait until its done (whenever that might be) and then play the V 1.0 release. This approach also helps players avoid the need to adapt to changes in mechanics the game might undergo in EA.
And no, funding does not directly equate to sped up development schedules. Just look at Star Citizen.

I'm trying to figure something out myself.....why do people think the players forum, consisting of players and the mods, is the place to ask questions potentially answerable by only the devs? That and the fact a quick forum search would reveal this gets asked quite a lot and there's never an absolutely definitive answer - usually just a series of opinions based on guesses and conjectures with a side of troll.
This really does get asked every few days, please can a forum mod post a sticky, it just needs to say "when its ready" then explain steam policy and so on.
Guesswork suggests that as it is coming to GamePass, that extra work is being undertaken to ensure that works, we already know that there is going to be a midsummer micro update in about a week. A few banners, a crown and maypole. We know that Mistlands is being worked on. I am hoping it lands no later than 1 August so can play over summer, but I doubt it.

Hey there,
as usual, I can't speak for the devs, but with regards to "minimal content" or "no updates", you might want to take a look here:
https://valheim.fandom.com/wiki/Version_History
In addition to that, there's a new update on the public test branch with an overhaul of the (cloud) save system + some cosmetics.
Just because it's not visible assets, or not the ones you want, doesn't mean it's not work to add it.
Hearth & Home came out September last year, Frost Caves in March.
One of the devs has given the estimate that major updates take about 6 - 9 months, but that's obviously dependent on how much goes right or wrong. Mistlands is the first new biome after the EA release, so they don't have experience yet on how much that will clash with live versions.
TL;DR: nobody knows, it's ready when it's ready.
Have a good day!
