Beater, Builder, or Voyager; which one best fits your playstyle?
Beater: Beat the game; nothing else matters much except how fast.
Builder: Build structures that are works of art, tame the world with infrastructure.
Voyager: Go everywhere, do everything, preferably all at the same time; synergy is king.
Maybe some of you have better names and/or definitions?
These are meant to represent archetypes, most players probably fall between two or even all three to a degree but favor one. For instance, I consider myself a Voyager, but I do fit a certain type of Builder to a degree (functional), beating the game is not a primary goal just a side affect.
/me puts on flameproof vest; "Fire away!"

You forgot about homesteaders. People who don't build great works of art but instead idyllic homesteads where they can escape from the real world.

Well, I could argue they are included in "tame the world with infrastructure".. but you're right, thanks :)

I keep attempting to buck my own tendencies; started a new plain vanilla 'Beater' char run the other day. However, I became sidetracked as I was intrigued by some thoughts for implementing some 'House Rules' for alternate progression aimed at Voyagers and Builders.
Until I discuss it with a modder or someone very familiar with the recipe mods, it will still require use of console and devcommands once per each new biome 'unlock'. Still working out the details but discarded the old 'die roll' treasure hunt idea with a new recipe based scavenger hunt idea - still encourages exploration and bypasses the boss kills and event progressions entirely. Aiming for a good fit with /noportals and even *shudder* /nomap options .
It should turn out to be a 'no-bosses'-lite play-through; the end game would probably revert to kill bosses in some random order with increasing difficulty (via num players global). The real handicap is no Forsaken powers until endgame.
Anyhow, so now doing a trial 'by-hand' run as a Voyager (of course) and will be doing a bit of Builder in a Combat Engineering way.
Thanks for all the replies, it is very interesting to learn how others play this great game.

Hunter/Builder suits my style. I enjoy stealth games as long as they are not those lame 'press X to climb/vault/break' style button mashers.
Something abut high stakes, going out into plains or something in troll hide, maybe a fine bow, and see how well I can do stalking enemies, singling out targets, managing larger pulls, the situational awareness of adds spawning and moving around especially at night. The experience is calculated, looming, and most satisfying.
Otherwise, I love building in Valheim. Towers, Cabins, Castles, Cities, Bridges, you name it. I personally think that any game should have a high level of artistic creativity. I don't like prefab base parts where you just build some number of the same buildings in rows just to get +1 to some 'resource' number. You know the types, where the game is like, "You must clearcut the world to maximize profit". That is sickening to me.
Valheim on the other hand, includes a lot of natural environment, the AI is rather splendid with lots of spawn aggro. In Valheim, when I push forward, the game pushes back. It's just fantastic.

I like both exploring and building but i’m definitely a builder. Sometimes i’ll break out into building just because the place looks nice. Fix old houses in the meadows, etc.
My recent pasttime has been estabilishing a circular perimeter of outposts not too far from the center. The idea being having a starting point to travel to the mistlands, in whatever direction that may be.
Also about beating the game: so far Valheim - for me - has been playing pretty much like games such as Subnautica or The Forest.
… which means i’ll never take the final steps to finish the story and just stay and build forever :3

For now, mostly a builder. Need to do a little more exploring and beating to get better stuff to build with.

Well, Explorer-Socializer-Achiever-Killer is my Bartle list. I like to kill bosses, explore, and build. I don't see these as separate parts of the game. You have to do them all well. Neglecting one aspect makes success at the others far less likely.

my friend and i always set out to explore, then find some neat spot and start yet another mini-base. then we both fall in love with the new build and spend days and days there building, and before we know it, it's the new main base. so we're both definitely builders.

I would say I'm more of a voyager, but I also get into a building mood at times.
I'm currently more in the beater mode, but not in the traditional sense, but in working through the challenges (no portals, no map, no bosses, etc). Not really trying to beat the game, just trying to get the stuff that I want (better armor, weapons, building materials, etc), with the difficulty raised a few notches.

I'm more of an Explore, the exploit, then conquer kind of person. I do a little of everything. Not interested in rushing the experience I don't mind taking the time to farm, gather, hunt, and build to meet my current goal (What ever it was that i chose.)
