Lost my first Karve to a serpent.
I've been beating serpents with flint arrows and a lv 1 fine bow for 100 hours just fine though admittedly there were some very close calls. Last night I had lv 3 or 4 iirc Hunters bow and bronze arrows and somehow still lost my karve to a serpent. (I killed it with a swing of my bronze sword after the boat broke and then drowned lol so it was very close to death when it broke.)
I have a feeling that this was because I accidently shot my own boat at least once, but just to make sure - are there starred serpents or larger, harder serpents currently in the game? I basically thought I didn't have to worry about them much and it turns out I'm dead wrong.

no, no starred serpents in vanilla game. They are all the same.
You probably forgot to repair your ship or hit a couple of stones in shallow waters and started hunting with already damaged ship.

this is tragic.. a Krave can take quite a few hits from a serpent.. it does sound like you probably hit your own boat once or twice or perhaps it was low on health from something else.... I stop and repair often.. with the weapon you had and arrows should have been easy work.

Ok thanks for the info. And yes my boat was damaged at the time because it was the second serpent I encountered on that scouting trip and I hit a rock at some point. Combine all of that and yeah I probably should have sailed to the nearby meadows and repaired before continuing.
But the mission was a success at least. I found my second large swamp and I'm hoping its filled with crypts hehe. And I got 20 serpent meat and some scale as a bonus. Luckily recovering everything was fairly easy.
The hit to skills always stings though.
