I'd have to ask what they are even planning with the ocean. Unless they let us start diving, I don't see how you can add too much. Maybe some additional boats + customization, leading to a few more enemies placed out there, but you are still pretty limited on what you can do on the surface. Then again, I'm not a creative game designer.

If IG is still trying to follow the original roadmap they had before H&H then IIRCC Oceans will be the next big update. But that was last year so no guarantees.
No idea on possible release date. I thinnk Mistlands was supposed to be release about 6-8 months ago. So Oceans? late 2023 maybe.
The sad state of affairs with so many EA games nowadays.

bacon has some nice points tho. It's really not easy to imagine what they would do with it. I mean.. stuff we can do in the ocean is rather limited.
It also MUST be between swamp and mountain, or even something between black forest and swamp difficulty for it to make sense.
Would it be just surface stuff? Would they finally introduce diving and some under water action? We dunno.
It's easy to get disappointed again when we try to think about what would be fun .. only to end up having next to no changes.. one shark .. another sea serpent and a not so useless harpoon gun.
Diving also probably would require a ton of stamina. Thinking about it. With the current stamina balance mindset. Diving wouldnt make any sense. We can't even swim 10 meters without high end stamina food.

would definitely like the ability to dive or explore underwater biomes, dont know how they would do it though. also the ashland are and frozen areas can definitely be an option too.

There will be no "ocean biome"
Initially the "Ocean update" is just called "UPDATE 3" - "Saga Worthy Seas, Even More Ships"
There is NO "new biome" tag like at "UPDATE 4" - NEW BIOME - Voyage to the Mistlands
One part (fishing and new fish) are already added, so i only expect a new (customizable) ship and maybe 1-2 new enemies in ashlands coast and deep north coast.
This update will be smaller than cult of the wolfes (Update 2)!
So dont rise expectation when you now talk about "new Ocean BIOME - when???"

Please note that the old roadmap that can be found here hasn't been valid since June 2021, as per this update.

pretty simple honestly considering how much money they made it would be to add a ocean boss like a kraken some more mobs and maybe a underwater dungeon that would be really dope and for the ashland and far north they could add giants and and maybe a volcano and ice caves with frost trolls or somthing I really wanna see horses and dragon riding because we have boats we have mounts why not add a way to fly that would be really dope I also think alot of the bosses need reworks specifically the abilites like the elders useless wood ability and they could expand on ship customisation like armor side shields sails and weapons on ship they honestly have so many options for content releases i just hope they dont starve us with food updates and building blocks like its legos

Ashlands is almost certainly next, based on the early roadmaps and on the presence of a small amount of prep work there thats in the game, and all but guaranteed by the progression of fishing as implemented with Mistlands.
As for Oceans, its hard to do that much with oceans since its a biome you can, by intentional design, access almost from the start of the game. They might be able to add an extra smaller critter or two maybe, assuming they can implement a purpose for whatever they provide (Its one of their design requirements that everything in Valheim has a purpose), but otherwise I would expect fishing stuff and similar to be the main area of expansion for ocean stuff. I'm guessng that Fish 'n Bread is just the first new recipe for the expanded fishing stuff, and that more recipes will (and should) eventually come for the lower tier fish. Otherwise I think they cant do much, critter-wise, with the oceans unless there is an extra limitation on when players can really get to that bit of ocean. Maybe adding a cold-resist requirement for new ocean stuff if you're way up north, or fire resist for way down south, to create ocean areas that are ocean but have a frozen north or ashlands tag attached to them? That would enable them to add more ocean stuff in those areas with no issue of a noob in leather armor and a raft wandering into it.

it isnt clear to me how much work oceans really need. i like that the oceans are desolate, and the only thing you see are turtles and serpents. now, even with just the fish jumping, it almost feels too busy.
its also not clear how to balance the oceans, because they are an ubiquitous biome. oceans are basically parallel with swamps, since you get the big boat when you get iron. so, from a balance perspective, what can they add that will appeal to players that are already done with the game? and how do you add content to a biome that is so unevenly explored in existing worlds?

I would imagine Ashlands and Deep North, and can only hope for Oceans content release; even though its the one Ive been most excited for. With the rate of content patches so far they may skip the Oceans patch
