Modding a server (player configs)

Hi, I'm new to modding in Valheim but I think I've pretty much got my head around it for a solo game. The question I have is around setting up a server for me and my friends.

I understand how to set the server up, how to amend the configs etc. I know that the players who join need to also have the same mods (and same version) but what about the mod configs? If i edit the config of a mod, do the players then need to edit thier own version of the mod config, or will the server push my amended mod configs on them?

I imagine it'll be painful if they need to edit each mods config file to align with any tweaks I make.

Thanks for any info.

I've been wondering this myself. Specifically with Valheim+.

In my mind you should be able to edit your config and then just share that file with your friends. But I have no idea if that works, never tried.

So I know with Valheim+ there is an enforcer in the config file. It says something like "force all clients to use these configs". If you put that to true any player who joins the server will use the servers V+ config file irrespective of the settings in their own config file.

Problem is what if you add another mod to your server that has a config file. You change the config from default, and then a player joins who has the same mod but their config is still default. Does the server push the change?

Am I literally going to have to add mods to the server, tweak the configs and then copy all the config files and distribute them to players so they can overwrite their own?

Lots of guides to modding servers but they all seem to stop before this step.

If you use R2modman from thunderstore, then you just need to give your profile code to your friends. They use the code to make a profile and all the mods will be automatically installed with the same configurations.

Don’t forget to upload config files to the server too.

weird, I can find it with a google and its a thunderstore mod but when I open it Thunderstore says it doesn't exist. Even though it says it was updated 2 days ago. https://thunderstore.io/package/ebkr/r2modman/

What you cannot find? R2modman?
It should be the first mod on the list when you open the webpage.

Your link works for me. Download manually and install.
Add all the mods you want directly from R2modman. Tweak all config files to your likes and start the game locally for a few minutes so the new config files can be generated.
Then upload config files and plugins to the server and share your code with friends.
The code can be found somewhere in settings, not sure exactly where (im not at my PC right now).
Your friends then need to install R2modman and create a profile using your code.

That's awesome, thank you so much :-) The error was when i tried to open the mod in thunderstore. It also doesn't appear there but I'll do as you say and do it directly.

So essentially thunderstore and R2modmanager are the same?

Featurewise, more-or-less. The main difference is that r2mm is maintained directly, while TMM is maintained and provided by a commercial third party (Overwolf).
