on this map one swamp not fully explored (5AEimVVLKV) i have found 9 crypts and 2 surtling spawn points plus bonemass, this is in about 50% of the area. this has equaled a lot of iron and surtling cores. my base is near bonemass in case of death

Been playing a no-portal run, and went off to lay claim to the Bonemass swamp. It took days to get there, sailing from one end of the world to the other, trying to get around some huge continents in between, but finally got near it, and it's all swamp or plains!

There is a very small island of black forest with another very small (uninhabited) island of plains attached to it near the area of Bonemass, which provided a good place to land the ship and prepare for a beach landing in the swamp.

The next day I sailed across the water and picked what looked like a good spot to attempt the landing. Just as my ship pulled into land, an abomination started rising right next to my ship! I jumped out on the other side of the ship and started running to draw him away from the ship, but ran into a cluster of draugr and skeletons.

I took down three draugr while the skeletons pestered me, with a small amount of health to spare... until a draugr archer showed up and finished me off!

Now I'm sitting on the other side of an unswimable waterway that leads to the shore of a swamp, in a minimal "lean-to", with all my stuff and my longship on the other side. What a pickle!


On the topic of the thread. I've found crypts with well over 100 iron scrap, and others with essentially nothing, so it ca vary quite widely.

@Faceplant8: I feel your pain. :P

Probably only one way out of this, if you have no way of constructing even a raft: Destroy your bed and get yourself killed by a deathsquito. At least it will be quick. :P

You will wake up in the circle of the Forsaken sacrificial stones and hopefully get to one of your bases from there.

Edit: Can you at least build a portal in your "lean-to", so you can come back later with the materials for a Karve or something?
No-portal run, I forgot.

Not sure of the best, but in my latest run I had one with 14 iron - worst ever for me.

How about no crypts at all in a Swamp? :-(
Have gotten 3 iron from oozers though. Nothing quite like foraging at night in a Swamp

On the other hand I won the lottery on my first 2 crypts and harvested about 230 iron. Haven't replicated that since (see first sentence for the most current experience).

Best? I think we had one that was roughly 120. There were at least 4 chests that all spawned about 19 or so. It was nearly 80 just from chests, then we mined all the scrap piles for another 40. Was the first crypt that took all four of us to do a run and still need someone to go back and haul a bit more and we each could carry nearly 30 pieces.

Always have a base closeby in a more friendly biome. It is highly recommended.

I've had over 60. Couldn't carry it all out so put half in a handy chest in a room one off the entrance and did a few back and forths.

I have had close to, if not over, 100. It all comes down to how many chests you get with iron in them. Getting 15 - 20 in one stack adds up quick.

I generally assume I'm going to get 50-60 iron per crypt, but it varies. I did a swamp run yesterday cleaning out 2 crypts. One only had 38 iron and the other one had 92, so my average held, but the variance was higher than usual :) Second the comment RE "number of chests" - that was def the source of a lot of the second crypt's haul.

I don't tend to count, but 60 is about average. Last one I went to had two chests that had a bunch of scrap in them already.

53 doesn't sound like that much. I guess it's average between the sucky ones where you get ~20 and the ones with 100+. I looted 8 crypts in a swamp in my current game and I filled up 2 chests, so 600 iron for an average of 75 iron per crypt. (I actually didn't finish the last one but decided to stop after 2 full chests for now)

Not to drift too far off topic but I am still curious from the game design perspective if this is actually iron or steel. Roman legionaries carried their steel short sword (gladius) and 3-4 iron javelins (pila). The cheap iron in the javelin was meant to bend and break in an enemy shield so the opponent had to drop the shield and make them easy prey for the short sword. But back to topic, I've usually seen 60-70 iron from a single crypt. Coming back into the swamp with the wishbone and buried muddy scrap piles have around 5-12 iron.
