Is it worth relocating my main base?
Hi, so I've found an island barely within enemy-spawing distance of the mainland (Meadows biome) near my main source of iron, and some black forest, plains, and a mountain. I've just entered the mountain phase of the game. It's about a day and a half's sailing from the centre of the map. Given that it sounds like I will need to visit many mountains to get the ores I need, is it worth relocating here?

To answer the question directly; no. It is not worth relocating a base. As others have said, you should make a few during the course of the game.
I have a main base with everything I needed to get through the bronze age; it has a nice portal hub and a full indoor smelting/forge operation. It is in the meadows, fully moated and impervious to attack. Right on the water with a nice boathouse.
When I hit iron, I built another base similar to my first but scaled down to just include living essentials and a second smelting operation specifically for iron. It is located in meadows just outside of a swamp with many crypts.
I found no need to build a full base in the Mountains, but I did renovate a nice castle for my time there. I placed a dock and small camp across a meadow at the base of the mountain to load my silver ore and boat it back to my main base since it ended up not being all that far.
I am now in the plains and, again, see no need for a base here, yet. Black metal was, again, easily loaded into a boat and shipped to my second smelting location near the swamps.
So don't overbuild early in the game except for your main base. It will serve you well over time. With full defenses you can portal back there every night to sleep and rarely ever get raided. If you do, just relax and do some cooking until they go away. I use it constantly.
You do need a base in the Plains for farming/processing flax and barley, which only grow there.
Nope.
My secondary forge/smelting operation is in Meadows and only a few hundred meters from a small Plains biome. I built a fenced area right across the edge where I grow Flax and Barley in sufficient quantities for what the game demands.. No reason to build a base within the Plains, which can be quite aggressive from a mob standpoint.
Now, I reserve the right to change my opinion later if I see a significant need for Black Metal, but as it currently stands, the amount needed can easily be transported to my Meadows forge.

Having a fenced area in the plains where you grow flax and barley... is having a base in the plains for farming flax and barley. Just because it's also in the meadow doesn't make having to be in the plains to grow flax and barley any less true. My plains base is right at the edge of the plains too. It's still a plains base.
Having bases near multiple biomes is good, though. I have one base near meadow/black forest for tin/copper, one base near a swamp/mountain for iron/silver, and a base on the edge of plains/meadow for blackmetal/flax. No reason to transport metal long distances when it's so easy to just set up multiple forge areas.

I understand your point, but I do not consider a 5x5 fenced patch of dirt to be a base.

We didn't relocate our starter base, but when I located a nice berry farm with 2 star boars, and in an ideal location on the coast with Black Forest, Swamp and Mountain biomes very nearby. It became our second "main base" that we're more attached to. Both are defended with moats, full of resources, and have upgraded workbenches and forges, and contain teleporter hubs.
Additionally, we build many, many scout bases that are in good locations to regain the rested buff, store items temporarily, etc. Sometimes they are reclaimed structures we find, and sometimes we build a small building with fences and some comfort items. I think you can never have too many bases if you're enjoying exploration in addition to pursuing bosses and gathering resources that you need. In the late game, I plan to build a castle in the plains.

make another, no reason to relocate, it takes almost as long to bust it up as to make a new one anyway.

I would say its worth creating a resource outpost further away for gathering and/or refining resources.
This is actually the part in the game where I was torn about how portals function.
You end up in this weird position where you need "early game" heavy metals, to refine your "new" heavy metals, so you ether have to sail all your "new" metals back to refine them, or sail your "early game" metals up to your new outpost.
Or you have to find "early game" metals in another Black Forest Biome near your new outpost.
This part of the game is a bit jank.
It wouldn't be so bad exploring Black Forest again if there was new things to see and explore, if there was like "late game" Black Forests with different things in it. But there isn't so unless you have to rehash the same looking area, looking for the same metals again, you have to opt to sail your stuff around, until you build a new outpost.
This is where I think you ought to be able to store more on your ships. Like, being able to trek around for resources and not only have "4" slots on your second ship.

Making multiple bases is fun, make a farm for your barley and flax, build a fabriating base somewhere else etc. I just made a base around a troll cave with a great ocean view. The resources really shouldnt be a problem, you dont need much to build a base tbh

Portals make a centralized base pretty easy to work with.

Depends on your playstyle. Here are my three main bases:
1- newbie base near your initial spawn
2- main mid-game base. Running distance to swamps to get iron.
3 - late game base in the plains.
+ several mini-bases near each boss and the trader consisting of a protected workbench and portal.
Out of these the most important one for me was the second one. It is 100% worth it to relocate to a location with easy access to iron IMO and makes your whole mid-game pahse much easier. As for silver, it's up to you but I don't think it's as important and it's less advantageous to relocate just for this.

If you want you could just relocate your workshop and keep your main base. I set up a workshop beside the swamps that's portal connected to my main hub, so I just bring the ore straight to the workshop and do all my forging there. Then I teleport back home with all my crafted equipment. When the swamp is cleared, I destroy the workshop and move on.
Sailing is way too much of a pain in the ass to be manually transporting ore around the map.

It's really up to you - my advice is not to get too attached to any single base location.
There's probably no reason to pick up your entire original base and move everything to the new location. What I've done recently is build a brand-new base and link it to my old one via portals.
Having a foothold in the center of the map is quite useful. Outside of that, I try to build up one reasonably well-stocked base in each biome.
A portal hub is important to have in order for this to be feasible, but that part can be located anywhere - I quite like using the empty biomes (mistlands/ashlands/deep north) as portal hubs, a lone tower standing out in the ashlands can be a pretty atmospheric place to transition between biomes/bases.

You can have a 'main' base or several. Their location doesn't really matter because you have portals. Usually, my criteria for choosing a location boils down to something like, this would be a good spot for a dock, or this spot has a great view, or this spot has a large open area I can kill all event raiders ;)
Before you say anything about not being able to transport ores through a portal, just smelt them on site, craft them into the finished product and then transport what you make ;)
Alternatively, you could just world hop... Carry everything you want to transport to another world, hop back and then portal home, log back in to the other world and carry everything back over to your world ;)
