If you planned to do a lot of mining and/or wood cutting in a given Black Forest area, it is a good idea to clean it first of any Greydwarf nest (kind of pile of branchs with purple smoke). Once you clear them all, the number of Greydwarf spawning decrease significally.

at night - groups of 4-5 greydwarfs spawn around you in a distant
also around 1-2 graydwarf shamans and at least 1 greydwarf berserker. they will follow sounds, lights and fighting noises and attack on sight

at day - groups 1-3 greydwarvs spawn around you maybe 1 shaman but not very often

also keep in mind - often black forest structures (ruins, old towers) have seperate groups of greydwarfs mostly 3-5 greydwarfes and a shaman, and sometimes a berserker

check out for purple-ish fires in the forest those are spawners for all types of greydwarfs
if possible take em out

so. dont do stuff at night when near or in the black forest until you are good equipped

As M.Red pointed out, mark on your map all the purple-flamed Greydwarf Nests, and either take them out (smash the nest to bits, it will drop an Ancient Seed, necessary to spawn the 2nd boss), or give them a very wide berth, their detection/agro range is quite large, and they will continually spawn and attack you in never ending waves.

They don't like people cutting down their wood...or messing with their copper. So yeah, greydwarves are constantly griefing you. Fortunately after a few upgrades of bronze gear they're no trouble to kill.

Ah, but they drop the resin you need for torches.

But yeah, they can be annoying if you're trying to do something else.

Resin can be had from beech saplings in the meadow. Easily harvested with a Stagbreaker or iron sledge.

But remember, you are in *their* house and if you come into it and be a noisy guest, like logging, mining or just generally running around and being nosy about things, it kind of puts them off and they let you know.

So cut it out! lol

Cutting trees or pick-axing will bring them from 1/2 a mile awhile. At night, there are about 3x to 4x more.

If your mining or tree cutting. Placing a carpet of work benches every 25 m will prevent them spawning nearby. However, having 3 or more benches up can count as a base and your then subject to having a raid. If your early game, raids are only boars and neck. Easy to dispatch.

Also dwarves don't like fire. So that will deter the base ones at least.

When in black forest early, always have the rest buff active. As soon as it comes off, build a fire, hit x key to sit down next to it. 30 seconds later you have 8 minutes worth of rest buff. That will increase your stamina regen and give a 50% bonus to XP.

If your just exploring, you can try sneak mode to not get as many aggroed to you.

Funny thing is once you get used to the game you will realize how easy the Black Forest really is.

Surround your areas with camp fires all over - burial chambers, copper mines, troll cave (if you want) and your main areas. Cut down the underbrush. Doing these 2 things will cut your interactions down in half.

Crafting a sword & shield makes the combat feel a lot less clunky. It's pretty much twice as fast as the axe. Also the Black Forest is pretty unique in how frequently you get mobbed for trying to do any kind of material gathering, especially at night.

Uhh.. have you been rolling in resin and wood chips?

They may just think you are a female Grey Dwarf.
